Behavior worse on supplements?

Hi all:

Sometimes I post about our 6 y/o. He's not really diagnosed anything - except officially very severe SID. Neurologist was leaning towards ADHD and not AS like older brother, but then he (Dr.) went in the hospital and we haven't finished the tests.

Anyway, we like to do B vitamins and calcium and zinc, probiotics, antioxidants and Omega 3 - and it's hard to find all together in a palitable form (Colin won't do pills). So, I found something called "Added Attention" that seemed to have most things - but also DMAE. DMAE is supposedly a natural stimulant and helps with attention.

Well, Colin went totally bonkers manic on us! He wasn't upset, he was happy but he was fast fast fast and out of control. I've read both for and against that if you medicate (stimulate) ADHD and get this kind of response you are dealing with Bi-Polar. But, our oldest (13) is as Aspie as they come and he did same thing on Ritalin. So....? Anyone else have any similar experiences or negative reactions to anything?

TIA,
Jackie

LR,

Rushing around this am but I wanted to thank you for those 2 links, they are great! I bookmarked them both and I'll have to study Karen's more carefully. I have her book but had not looked at her website.

From the chart, it looks like we are all undermethalators in our house. We have a few things in the over column, but mostly the under. This is really an interesting theory and kind of explains a lot.

I like Karen's logic and she is easy to read too.

As far as probiotics, we just started taking Culturelle, which is over the counter, every day (all of us take it.) For my little guy, who has the constipation problem, it has helped regulate him. Instead of going once a week, it's now every other day. I have always given him O'Soy yogurt which has inulin and lactobacillus, but I guess the culturelle is more intense in the colonies.

The culturelle is a capsule, I pop it and put it in juice. It does contain traces of casein (the lactobacillus is cultured on whey), but that has not adversely affected Eric and he is sensitive to milk products.

I haven'r really researched the probiotics more, I want to find out more about other brands, but was desperate with Eric's bm situation and this has done the trick for now. Mineral oil, which I also tried, had the opposite effect which wasn't good either.

The cultutelle also helps me too. I have always been pretty regular, but feel "lighter" if that makes any sense, on it. It's a little expensive, about $20 for a pack of 30 capsules and you take one a day. But you can get it at the drug store.

Anyway, thanks again for the good research to read. It is really, really helpful as we try to figure out which supplements are best.

Katherine
