MIKE SWAM IN THE DEEP END OF THE POOL TODAY!!!!!!!!!!

I know it is a silly sounding thing but this is sooooooooooo huge for him and he is SOOOO proud of himself, and yes we spend tons of time in the water every summer. It is one of his anxieties.

Up to about 6, Mike would only stay on the stairs and splash around unless I was holding him. Up until 4 even the holding him didn't really fly, lol. Then around 7-8 he would go off the stairs and stay right in the area of the stairs when swimming. Finally either last year or the end of the year before he would venture the whole shallow end. This year started the same way. Panic anytime he gets near the line. We have been at my mom's everyday this week so far swimming so I would keep reminding him it was ok, I was there and encouraging him. He finally did it!

First he and I swam together near the wall out to the stairs. When he saw how far he had gone and realized it was shorter to go across the pool he agreed to do it with me. Then he kept doing it over and over on his own!

The kid is a natural in the water. THe best natural swimmer of the bunch. I am SOOOO proud of him and glad he has this. We will be spending alot of time swimming this summer I do think.

WOOOHOOOO!!!!

Warren (now 14) had this type of anxiety. 4 yrs of swim lessons and he was still terrified if he was in the deep end w/o some sort of floatation device or a person holding him. He's a great swimmer, but water above his head made him freak. He's still not sure he likes the deep end where he can't touch-- in our pool he's tall enough to stand and still have his nose above water (it's only 5 feet and he's now 6'2"+).

That is sooooo huge!!!!! Yeah, Mike!
He and Sam sound so much alike. Sam's 7 this summer and now that he's sticking his head under water, I'm hoping to get him really swimming at the beach this year.

Last summer, at a family reunion I had to put up with my uncle throwing both his grandkids in the pool all day while Sam yelled that everyone was splashing. Then I had to endure the "I've been doing this since before they could walk" speech.....like the reason that Sam has anxiety over being in water over his head is somehow *my* fault.....ugh.

That is great news about your son.

I have my son in private lessons right now. He is almost 7 and still will not put his face in the water. Any suggestions?
