Birthday party ideas?!

This Saturday we are having a party for Alex's 9th birthday. Against my better wishes, we are having the party at our house (Alex's idea; I would've preferred a bowling alley or skating rink). We've invited 12 boys; although history has shown we never get that many that actually come (last year we invited 8; we had 3 show up). I am HOPING and PRAYING that we will have nice weather so most of the time can be spent outside.
So far, I'm planning a scavenger hunt and possibly getting some t-shirts the boys can tie-dye in the garage. But I need more ideas to occupy three hours worth of party!!! My creative juices have run dry, and wonder if anyone here has any ideas for games/activities that would be fun for 8-9 year old boys; indoors or out? Because Alex's ideas of fun are usually "different" (he actually would like "duck, duck, goose" and "pin the tail on the donkey"!), I have no idea what other boys this age might like to do. Also, I've never put together a scavenger hunt before; any ideas for that?
Thanks!
Laurie

How about a pirate party? The kids can even make their eye patches at the party (black construction paper and black string) - see if the dollar store has cheap hats or bandanas or swords (not necessary - and possibly dangerous depending on kids - LOL) - have the birthday boy wear a plastic parrot on his shouldar (also optional). All the kids have to say "RRRrrr" alot - tell bad pirate jokes (what's a pirates favorite letter? RRrrrrr What's a pirate's favorite pair of shoes? His bootys etc.) How about a treasure hunt....a series of clues written on scroll-like paper to look like maps.....put the treasure in a plastic chest (again, check dollar store - fill with coin candy and plastic jewelry - jewelry optional if there will be girls) bury in a sandbox - the kids have to work together to figure out the clues and to find the treasure - dig it up together - split the "booty". Make Deep Blue Sea punch - just blue raspberry lemonade mixed with clear pop (like Sprite) - can also float vanilla ice cream in it.
Can you tell I've done a pirate party before?? LOL! Just some thoughts.....
Happy Birthday Alex and good luck mom!

My kids attended a pirate party a few years back. I don't know most of what was involved, but I heard for a long time about the pirate ship battle they had, blasting mini-marshmallows at each other. I'd imagine that was a bit to clean up afterward, but they sure had fun. The kids got to help construct the pirate ships out of boxes first, then they had the battle.
I don't know that it goes along with the pirate theme, but another idea is to get tons of craft sticks or pipe cleaners and let the boys be creative in making something.
