Good afternoon ladies!
My 2 1/2 year old has not been diagnosed with anything yet but appears to show some signs of Aspergers. He is doing early intervention through the state right now. When he was younger, he wasn't as verbal as he should have been and also had some issues with eating. He now speaks sentences, knows his ABC's, numbers, shapes, colors, etc. I have been working with him every day and he has become pretty verbal. I am still working on his expressive receptive communication. He won't tell me what he did at school, but he will answer questions like what is Mama doing, where is Daddy, etc.
He goes to daycare part time and is doing well there. He eats everything (including fruits and veggies?!?!) and is very well behaved. He always listens and is the "most well behaved" kid in his class. He hit all his milestones on time and hit his motor milestones early (walked at 10 months!).
What concerns his teacher and his EI therapist is that he doesn't know how to interact with his peers. He smiles at them and seems interested but isn't quite sure what to do. Also, he can be kept busy pushing a car around the table or playing with a toy for a long period of time at school. At home, he is always on the go so this is quite a change from our home life with him.
He has started acting up lately and has started hitting (never hard) when he gets upset. He is pretty easily distracted but he does get frustrated when we don't understand what he wants.
Is there any books you can recommend for me to read? The EI person he might not qualify for services through our school system since he is so borderline. He is affectionate and has never had a problem with eye contact. He appears to be appropriately verbal (knows a lot of words, uses sentences, etc), and is good at following directions. I would like to help him as much as I can on my own as well since EI doesn't seem to be doing much for him and he might lose services at 3.
Currently, he gets speech therapy every other week to work on his expressive/ receptive communication. The problem is he gets really shy around her and just sits and smiles at her. When I ask him the same questions at home, he answers them. In fact, he talks non stop until he gets to school. All the way in the car, he asks "where is sun? is sun sleeping? the clouds are in the sky. see blinking light (school speed limit sign)." Then he walks into school and becomes mute. So frustrating!!
He is also getting developmental therapy every other week at school. I have no idea what they do here because her notes are confusing. The therapist writes that he listens and sits in line even though the other boys are running around and acting up. I don't see how thats a problem but she does. But she also says he doesn't engage the other kids as much as he should.
I would love any advice on what I can do on my own to help. I would also love any book recommendations. I feel like he likes other kids but doesn't know how to engage them.
We don't plan to get him diagnosed without first trying therapy to see if helps. He has been seeing these therapists for 1 month (he also saw them for 3 months last year).
Thanks! I lurk on this board all the time - you ladies are great!
