Book suggestions?

Hi all.

First a quick story, and then a question. Last night, after I found out that my son is on the spectrum, he did something just to "shore up" the diagnosis. He grabbed an small square ottoman, piled it on top of a round "mushroom chair" and began spinning the chair so quickly it was nothing but a big blur. That is, until the ottoman flew off, lol.

Anyway, now for the question. What books would you recommend for a newbie to PDD-NOS? I thought I saw a book recommended somewhere on here that was "written by" adults with autism. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

I actually found the book I was talking about. It was on another site. Here's the info in case anyone else is interested.

"One book I highly recommend for parents of kids on the spectrum is called 'Autism Life Skills' by Chantal Sicile-Kira. The author asked autistic adults what they thought was most important for an autistic kid to learn, and developed a top 10 list, with topics like self-esteem, safety, self-regulation (being able to manage their own emotional needs), etc."

Welcome, Rachel!

Since you put "written by" in quotes, I'm not exactly sure what you mean, but I can think of a few books written by people on the autistic spectrum, about their personal experiences with autism.

Temple Grandin, "Thinking in Pictures".

Daniel Tammet, "Born on a Blue Day". He doesn't mention AS much; His story focuses more on being a savant and having epilepsy.

Dawn Prince-Hughes, "Songs of the Gorilla Nation".

Donna Williams, "Nobody Nowhere"

None of these will give you any definite answers about your own child, but they can offer some insight which you wouldn't be able to get from the plethora of books written about autism by non-autistic people.

Hello and welcome. I'm not sure which book you are talking about, but I'm sure the other ladies will have great suggestions as well.
