Books to help explain to kids?
| Mon, 06-04-2007 - 10:26pm |
We are most likely going to be having a talk with DS (8) about his AS some time this summer. I've been looking for an age appropriate book to help explain it to him. He's a great reader, so I think this is the route to go. I know there have been posts on this topic before. Can anyone save me the time of looking it up?
Thanks,
Melissa

Hi Melissa, love your name!
There are 2 books I liked for this with Mike and many more he may be interested in.
1. "Asperger Syndrome the Universe and Everything" by Kenneth Hall. Kenneth was 10 when he wrote it (mensa smart) and Mike related to him very well. We read it together and they have many similarities.
2. "Asperger Syndrome, What does it mean to me". available through TEACCH and perhaps even Amazon. It is a workbook for kids with AS and autism. THough it may be a bit better when he is older. Cait did hers in 6th grade. Mike still refuses to do it, not sure why. Won't say. I think to him it looks like homework. he has no interest in learning about something he is already living I think, lol.
Then there are a plethora of "Asperger Adventure" books where the hero's/heroines have AS/ASD and are written right for that age level.
"Of Mice and Aliens"
"The Blue Bottle Mystery"
"Buster and the Amazing Daisy"
There are many more as well. If you look up those on Amazaon it will come up with a bunch of similar novels.

Thank you! I was able to get the novels you mentioned through interlibrary loan. Much appreciated!

Thanks, Melissa. No luck with this one in the library system, but I'm going to check the local bookstore this weekend. Appreciate the help.
