Kyle's been asking a lot of questions lately about autism/asperger's. I try to explain but I'm not too sure I'm good at it. Are there any good books or video's about AS or the Autism spectrum geared toward kids. He is 10yrs and 5th grade. Thanks

Samantha

PS I also posted this question on APOV forum

I got the book "Can I Tell You About Asperger Syndrome, A Guide for Family and Friends?" by Jude Welton, which is geared primarily for the peers of kids with Asperger's, but it presents what Asperger's is perfectly for kids aged 7-12 years old. I'm planning to read it with Alex (who's almost 9) when I feel the time is right. He's been asking a lot of questions about why he has to have a resource teacher at school, etc. lately, so I think we'll be reading it very soon.

Would love to hear what others suggest, too!

I love the workbook "Aspergers, What does it mean to me?". It can be pricey but if you look around you can get one for about $25 rather than $40. I got mine online.

There are tons of other books and videos. I will likely answer this in both places so folks have the resources in both places.

Books -

I love the Asperger Adventure Books for this age. Some great stories where the hero's are kids with AS. It does help explain and it was one of the few Mike will read. There is "the blue bottle Mytery", "Of Mice and Aliens". If you look those up on Amazon you can get a bunch more recomendations.

"Asperger Syndrome, The Universe and Everything" by Kenneth Hall. Kenneth wrote this when he was 10 adn it is a great positive outlook on AS and how he has dealt with it and what his struggles are.

Videos -

CHeck out the Coulter videos. http://home.att.net/~coultervideo/index.htm

They have a couple on there for introducing AS to other kids in schools. I haven't seen the elementary school one yet but the high school one is a bunch of interviews with high school kids with AS. They are called the "Intricate Minds Videos". Dan Coulter has a son with AS and has a very positive outlook on things. I like his stuff.

You can view clips online for all the videos. The "Intricate Minds" one is $30 which isn't bad at all.

He also has a great video on teaching manners called "Manners for the Real World". We were able to preview here when DH had gotten it for work (it is a $50 video or was when DH got it a while back). It was awesome. Mike learned alot from that about manners.

Samantha,

I did get the book from Amazon; not sure why you couldn't find it. Here is the link to the book at Amazon (hopefully it will work!) :-)

Hi Samantha,

If you haven't found something already, here is a resource list I came across.
