Hi everyone. I'm Liz (my intro is below) and I have a question about siblings.

Well, I haven't personally found a good balance yet, but the therapist recently suggested we ask the high school principal if he can recommend some high school students, who need to meet service hours (required to graduate), who live in our neighborhood, who might be available to come to the house on occasional evenings to provide some help to my kids. Of course you need to position it that the teens would be providing social skills help or school tutoring help or whatever specifically would be helpful to you. Theoretically it then makes you available to spend special time with your other kids or get housework done.

I don't know whether you'd need a formal dx in order to get the principal to agree, though. It would seem like service is service, whether it's for a special needs child or just an overwhelmed family. I haven't contacted our principal yet, but I think it's a good idea.

My 10 year old NT helps other kids in the neighborhood. Since we live on base, a lot of these Moms are running around with 3 and 4 kids with no Dads to help. Since Bryanna helps at the bus stop to keep kids squared away, the Moms started asking if she could come over and play with the kids to entertain them while they catch up on housework. She's not there to babysit because she's too young but she will color with them or play ball in the backyard while Mom catches 5 min to herself. You might wanna look for older kids in the neighborhood who could just come over the play for an hour once a week. That would give you time to spend helping with homework, giving hugs or even braiding hair.. :)

My NT is 7yrs old & she gets her own therapy sessions.

Not only does it make her feel she is getting something similar to her brother, but, built in to the therapy are explanations about why her brother is how he is & ways to deal with him.
