While having breakfast at Bob Evans Saturday (me, husband and son), my son says in the clearest voice "What is asperger's? Both dha nd I looked at each other with this blank look. We hadn't really discussed how to tell him this and really thought we didn't need to for a while (he is 6). We were speechless and he asked again. My dh said "It's just the way some people think"> He said ok, and that was it. I am not sure we handled this right or not but I was so unprepared. Do you think we can jsut leave at this for a while?

If your DS seems content with the answer given then I would just let it lay for now. Pushing it might be a red flag for him that his differnces are in some way bad, and that would cause him to look at his autism as something bad or something he should be ashamed of.

BUT, I would suggest that you and your DH actively think and talk about ways to answer questions like that because it will come up again. He'll also have other questions like "Why am I different?" and/or "Why do I have Asperger's?" It will be a better situation all around if you do your best to be prepared for those questions and can answer them in a relaxed manner.

The answer you gave him already is a good one, and true. Keep with that line of reasoning and you'll do fine.

Just my 2 cents,
