I was poking around the board today and read Maria's question about hearing/OT...etc.

Paula mentioned CAPD and it sounded familiar but I had never really looked it up.

I found this site (it's a Dr's site, has a good explaination) http://www.judithpaton.com/

Boy does that sound like us. For Sam and surprisingly *ME* I think I may have CAPD. And I'm fairly certain that it's behind most of Sam's reading/spelling challenges. So, I'll likely be looking for an audiologist soon, maybe for both of us. I've been having a difficult time lately at work. When it's very busy (I work retail nights/weekends) I really zone out and my brain just s-l-o-w-s down. I always kinda knew it was a processing thing, but it's nice to have a name for it and know that I'm not crazy. And today I had a knitting group meeting. When all the kids were running around it was pretty difficult for me to have a conversation with the other adults. By the time Harrison and I left, I was exhausted. He wasn't being too difficult, but I assumed that it had something to do with how he behaves in a group setting. Now I'm thinking I was just burned out from trying to keep it together in the echo-y room while also keeping him in check. My nerves were fried.

I'm confused as to the line where ASDs start and CAPD begins though. I assume one can be dx with an ASD but *not* have a CAPD. But it sounds like most ASD kids/adults have some kind of sensory processing challenge.

I feel elated. I've always felt badly about being so sensitive to noise. Especially when it comes to the kids. It's hard for me to shop with them because I cannot think or process what I'm looking at/for with the kids in tow. And gatherings and parties with them are very draining for me. Now that I know there's a name for it, maybe I can make those situations easier to deal with.

Chrystee,

I remember the AHA! moment I had when reading about ADHD for Peter (the preschool tried to tell me he had it). It totally didn't fit him, but it fit me to a T!

Thanks for the book title, Paula. I'll see if our library has it.

The school and the neuropsych we used did an auditory discrimination test and he scored average in those quiet settings. But I really wonder why he still sometimes mixes up vowels; it really is like he is hearing the way he is pronouncing it. He still mixes up Bs and Vs at times. It has gotten better which totally feeds into the the schools,"it's a developmental thing." And I'm not entirely sure they'd teach him any differently but it's worth looking into.

I'd love to find out if I can be desensitized too! Life would be much easier for me; I'm high strung enough LOL
