Children with AS
|Mon, 05-05-2003 - 12:52pm|
I am a mother of one son with AS. He was diagnosed about 2-3 years ago and is currently 8 years of age.
I understand first hand the problems that a parent of a child bordering on the autistic spectrum faces. It is a constant challenge, but on a good day we have our accomplishments as well.
I have noticed, and this has saddened me that there are a major lack of resources for this sort of problem. Awareness is quite low for something that seems to be a growing problem for todays children.
I am not only a mother but I am a writer and I wish to try and change this for all of us. I would like to write an article and possibly a book about the day to day struggles of parents with AS and their children.
I would like to try and help furthur the resources that are currently available and help the public and our educators gain knowledge that hasn't been attained up to this point. What I am looking for is up to what you would like to tell me....explain to me what a day is like for your child, and for you. What was it like getting diagnosed and what struggles to get your child treated have you been through?
I understand the constant battles that a parent with this and many other similar problems face...which is the main reason for wanting to do a story on this topic. I think its time that people realize there are plenty of disorders on the mild end of the autistic spectrum and we need a way to treat them specifically, not with guessing games and misinformation....
If you would like to be a part of the article, feel free to email me with as much information about your day to day life as you like. I will send a list of questions to you and you can answer the ones you are comfortable answering.
I know that there have been national interviews, studies and articles done on this topic and perhaps the idea isnt a new one. One thing makes it a new idea. That is that I am a parent of one of these children.
They arent a study to me, nor are they a statistic, they are living breathing small humans and deserve the same rights a "normal" person overlooks on a daily basis...
That is what I wish to help you all gain
I would also like to hear from those of you that work in the field...Teachers, Doctors...etc....from those of you who believe in AS to those who dont....
Thank you for your time
