The poor kid, we knew it as coming; it was mentioned last December that he needs crwons, (btw:the child brushes, flosses and doesn't drink soda), and I took him to the one ped dentist that was recommended, but it was a zoo, too many kids, Cian (the calm one) flipped out when they tried to fill a tooth that didn't even involve anaesthesia and drilling. Needless to say sedation was mentioned...ok except not with you people who had no patience and yelled at my baby the entire time.
I found another ped dentist (rec by another parent of an ASD boy), and she is great; smaller practice, calmer etc...Cian loves her. Here'e the crunch; to do a sedation appt, we do it at an outpatient clinic and we pay oodles of cash for the privilage. Dh and I sucked it up and decided to go that way. The big zoo place was only going to give him an anti-anxiety med (ie: xanax for babies), here they give him general anaesthesia. I much prefer that as my kids often have no response to ani-d's or anti'a's.
Now we have to find $269 to cover the insurance deductable for the hospital, and the dentist STILL hasn't told me what I owe her, yikes...could be as much as $500......but worth it.....right?!

Yes sweetie, I think its worth it. Its alot of money but I had to do the same thing with nicholas and he wasn't even dx'd with anything yet. He had alot of work to be done and truely, I think it was the best decision for "him"
We first tried the "sleepy juice" but he just threw it up, so we bit the bullet and decided to knock him out.
Now I'm faced with a decision on Chris, who only needs one tooth filled but he is so pain sensitive that he can still feel exactly what the needles doing even after they put a presc strength numbing cream on the spot. He stesses out so bad everytime we go in that twice they haven't been able to get it done. And the second time he had a valium presc'd from my pediatrician.
So what do I do.... knock him out over one tooth, or wait until he needs more work done(depending on how bad this cavity is). I hate the thought of doing it over one tooth, but I just don't know...
Good luck with Cian sweetie, and how horrible for the first place to yell at your child. I mean come on, thats only gonna give him a dentist phobia. And I know all about that one, as thats what I have.

Oh poor guy. We went through a similar thing and yes it is worth it. My ds knocked out his front tooth at 10 mos and they had to reimplant it under anesthesia. When he turned 3 and started preschool he fell while running on the blacktop of the playground. Yes, the very same tooth and he didn't even put his hands out to protect himself. The tooth did not actually come out but turned dark grey.
I had lots of options. I tried waiting 2 months for it to fall out on it's own. The 1st dentist wanted to give him some sort of sedative where he would be awake! They told me some kids freak out on it. So we went to dentist #2 who was highly recommended by ds PT at school. In the end we chose the full anesthesia for $700 and the whole thing took less than 10 mins to pull the tooth! It was a tough choice but we had come so far on all his oral texture sensitivites with years of OT behind us. I didn't want him to regress and didn't want him to have a bad experience with dentists.
My ds loves his dentist and his ped too.
GL with what you decide.

Oh Dee Darlin', I am soooo right there with you. Well with Cian, actually...I absolutely hate the dentist and over the last 6 years we've spent upwards of $18,000 on my teeth. (I think I was telling you about this at the diner.) Being extremely poor, my mom took me to a "cut rate" dentist for extractions and braces-believe it or not, my mouth was actually too small for my teeth! The old man was good, and kind, and gentle- but he had a flippin' nerve condition that made him shake like a leaf! No exaggeration, he would come at me with a needle full of novacaine (sp?) and I was afraid he'd miss and numb my nose! That fear has stuck with me for over 20 years, and it's not going away any time soon.
Yeah, it's a lot of money, but it's worth it. Anything you can do at this early age to help prevent a major adult phobia (like mine) will be worth it, I promise.
Amy-
who's off to take a Xanax now that she's relived those memories again!
Hi Dee!
Our neighbors son needed 6 teeth capped and they had him sedated as well. He brushes and flosses, doesnt eat alot of junk, just bad genetics. Best decision they made. They were able to do them all at once and he did great for it. Their ped dentist has priviledges at our Children's Hospital so they did it there and they gave him some "happy juice" before hand to "relax" him, they gave him the gas to knock him out and then did the IV afterwards to be sure. I am positive that if Nick needs any dental work we will need to do the sedation route as I know if a dentist comes at him with a needle he will flip out. I had to take a splinter out of his hand tonight and he was awful.
Can the office put you on a payment plan? Most places will do that. I would ask! Let us know how it goes!

Well worth it.
I had to take Siobhan to the ped dentist for a filling yesterday (that kid has been having a very bad week).
Well, I think they overdid it a little on the lidocaine or whatever it is, (Siobhan was saying "ow" so they loaded her up with more, but now we think she "ow"-ed in response to pulling on her cheek, not the actual drill)

HOLY CRAP!!
Looks like the $500 I quoted was conservative at best; even after medical and dental insurance we still have to find at least $1200, and it may go to more...aaarrrghghgh, good thing we found out dh is getting a pay raise this year.
Dee (now obsessing over anything Cian puts in his mouth and becoming teh toothbrushing Nazi)
Lol, sealant is part of the $1200, and Cian is a mouthbreather, now that you mention it. But ins won't cover that for baby teeth...sigh
Oh well
