I'm trying to organize my thoughts about something, and I'd appreciate seeing some other perspectives. If your child with AS/Pdd were going into 3rd grade and there was a choice between 2 multi-age configurations, 1st to 3rd or 3rd to 6th (supposedly the same academic level/curriculum), which would you choose? Why?

I am sure that this is a rather tough decision for you. I guess, in my opinion, you have to first consider your child's emotional level. Would he fit in better with the older kids or is he emotionally immature and would be better off with the younger class? You also need to consider the child's academic abilities. Are they more like the younger kid's or more like the older class?

I guess, if it were my child, depending upon the answers to the above questions, I would probably put my child in the younger class. My reasoning is this: if he were to go in the older class, he is going to be "low man on the totem pole" so to speak whereas if he were to attend the younger class, he hopefully will be looked up to as one of the older students in his class. This may give him confidence because he could help younger students using his strong points. If he were academically advanced in areas, the teacher could make a folder with advanced work in it to keep him from getting bored.

So, all in all, I would probably choose the younger class.

I'd go with your gut feeling. In my particular case, I'd chose the older grouping, because my Aspie has always felt more comfortable around older children (some of whom 'get' his interests/obsessions which have always been older than his years) and also he would be learning social skills from a more mature, more able cohort. His academic skills (apart from those involving organisation, multi-tasking and group work) have always been good anyway so I wouldn't worry about him keeping up - but he does prefer to be 'ahead' and notices if he is struggling with things that others find easy, so that might be a consideration for you. It would also, for me, depend on how much extra support he'd get in each situation, and how the support would work. The biggest area of concern for me would be around PE, as my Aspie's skills in this area are non-existant (partly physical, partly social/emotional) and he'd need a lot of support to have a hope in hell of participating on the kind of physical sports older children would play.


I don't know if this helps, I can only give you what *I* would have to think about in your scenario, I don't know what issues or struggles your child has in school. My NT 7 year old has been in composite classes a few times in his school career, and he does seem to behave better when he is the youngest in the class (because the older children, particularly boys, provide inspiration for him) than if he is in the mid-to-older range - for him, he then seems to mirror less mature behaviour and get into trouble more.

Like the others have said I can only say what I would do if it were my child...DS is 8 and going into 2nd grade (though he is 3rd grade eligible).
