Combing hair

I recently found out that Nathan has been combing his hair in the morning. This is quite funny, because we have his head buzzed. It's extremely short. I walked in on him doing this, and I was quite surprised. I've never seen him do this before. Tyler says he's been doing this for awhile now. Tyler doesn't even TOUCH his hair, or his face for that matter! LOL I always have to tell him to wash his face after he eats!
Nathan doesn't like getting his haircut, but he did inform me last time that it was time to get his haircut....it was getting long apparently! It's funny though, because there are only 3 shirts and 3 pants that he will wear. One shirt even has holes in it, but he INSISTS on wearing it! He doesn't even care if he wears something more than once a week. So I find it odd that he cares what his hair looks like! Why comb something that doesn't move???? LOL I can't tell if he actually cares about his appearance or not?!

Hey Michelle,
It might not be about his looks, but instead about the way it FEELS. Combing short hair may just feel nifty to his scalp, and the hair too long doesn't feel right to him! And those 3 sets of clothes feel downright comfy. Even breezy, with holes lol.
Malcolm doesn't really care about his looks on any real connected level, although he hates too snug of waistbands and too tight of socks. Which makes sense.
Just my thoughts,

Sara,
It's so funny because Nathan doesn't like his head scratched, touched....NOTHING! He does let me touch his head and I do scratch it a little just to get him used to that feel. But he really doesn't prefer it. He always rubs his head after someone touches him! LOL I did ask him lastnight about the hair combing thing. I asked him if he was just making sure it looked good...and he said yes. Too funny!! I also see him looking closely at himself in the mirror too. He used to just make funny faces!
And the clothes thing. He definitely likes the comfy feel. But the rest of his clothes are clothing HE picked out, and actually wore last year!!! But I'm not surprised, because he does this with his food too. After awhile....he just "changes" his mind about something. And he's off to something new!!!
It's interesting watching him grow up. The way he does things, how he does them....very different from his brother or any NT. I'm learning alot about how his mind works!!

That is so funny! Wouldn't it make life so much easier if our kids came with a manual explaining all their little quirks. I tend to agree that he's showing interest in his appearence.Or maybe he's imitating you or his dad? I think I'd fall down in a heap if Jake ever showed any interest in what he wore or how he looked(LOL).
Teresa
maybe he likes the feel?
maybe they've talked about hygene in class and combing one's hair?
maybe he's imitating his daddy or someone else he's seen combing hair.
I don't think it necessarily has anything to do with wanting to look nice, sounds to me like it's just something he decided he liked doing.

Yeah, it might be that he's imitating!!! Hadn't thought of that one! He does imitate things that he sees or reads about...and even things on TV too! And that's true about school, he does carry over things to home. I remember last year, he did that in kindergarten.
He's been also wanting me tell him a bedtime story. While he's in bed, I'm supposed to "make up" a story!!! (his rule!) We usually read downstairs in the evening, on the couch. I CAN'T read to him at bedtime. I tried that when Tyler was little. I end up yawning the ENTIRE time, because I'm so tired!!!!! lol Anyway, I found out that there's a cartoon that he and his brother watch...where this happens. A made up story told at bedtime. He thinks that's cool. I'm just not that imaginative!! lol If I start that....he'd want a story everynight!!!!! lol
