A private school has invited Malcolm for a 2 day visit starting this Wed. and Thurs. Light us candles and send us good thoughts. It is NOT a "right" school on paper and we all, including them, have many reservations as to whether they can support Malcolm properly and this could indeed be all wrong.
But in my heart I have been hoping and wishing and praying since I saw the school and met with the staff (very, very kind) that this be the right next step for Malcolm. And they are interested. And their concerns are all the right ones, which is a very good place to start (as some nun sang about in the Alps in that musical). So, despite my amazingly huge worries, after our last disaster, I am daring to hope.
The school is actually in Greenwich CT and it is so gorgeous, looks like out of Harry Potter, green trees everywhere and a huge playground and old stone buildings with stained glass. The classes are very small (6 - 8) and they are primarily a school for learning disabilities, and of course Malcolm doesn't struggle AT ALL with academics. BUT the population is very NT-ish, well-behaved, and yet they do struggle with social issues and speech, so they have speech therapists and counselors and social skills groups, etc. But they do not have many spectrum kids here. The school doesn't have OT, but we are allowed to have OTs come to the school and work with him and teachers, they have had this happen before. But this school would indeed be a challenge for him socially.
There is still a chance there will be room for him back at ASD school starting this Summer, also there are 2 other very supportive special needs schools that might still take him but we need to learn more about them... So this is not our only option, although room at those 3 schools is hardly guaranteed as someone needs to leave and they still don't know if anyone will. But the reason we don't want him to stay in those environments is that they just aren't enough challenge for him on any fronts. Still, as several have pointed out, he needs to mature and those environments will be safe for him while he does. Sigh.
Anyways, wish us luck. Malcolm is very curious about CT school and looking forward to going, if only to get away from us for a few days, I think lol. He is SO tired of grownups. Today he asked me if I might consider going away for a few days soon LOLOL! Good idea!!!
