Has anyone ever heard about Dan Marinos son. He was diagnosed at 2 with autism and didn't speak a word until age 4 but now seems to have "recovered". It gives me hope but then I don't have Dan Marinos money to pay for all the therapy it must have taken to get his son better.

I did see once that he was on 6 day a week 6 hours a day therapy - and he was considered severe...

Well, it wasn't his money or the amount of therapies honestly. Therapy does help don't get me wrong but sometimes you just don't know what helps one child over another. Some can appear pretty severe in the beginning and make fabulous progress and others won't with the same level of treatment. It is one of the mysteries of autism. Don't beat yourself up over having to have a certain amount to have your child recovered or conversly beat yourself up over it if it doesn't happen.

Dan Marino's son is doing awesome. There is an interview on line from last february that shows him and his autism was barely noticable at all. However, it isn't always about the money. Doug Flutie has the same resources as Dan Marino monetarily, has set up a foundation and provided his son all the possible treatments and his son is very severely autistic. In fact it is my understanding that he is still nonverbal.

My nephew and my friends son are like this. They are about the same age (give or take months) and started therapy at the same time at about the same level of impairment. My friends son is no longer on an IEP and scored the highest possible scores on his state testing. My nephew is still classically autistic (though high functioning and the neatest kid in the world) but he is definitely classically autistic and is repeating first grade, has a full time aide and is pulled out half of the day for resource. In fact my SIL has had to fight each year for mainstreaming instead of day class because he does better in mainstream.
