Today was a really hard day for David. He woke up in a good mood and everything was fine, but right before he went to school, he wanted to show Nathan the book he wrote last night. Nathan was in a funk and refused to look. David had his heart set on showing it, and was really disappointed, in an Aspergery kind of way.
When it was time for me to pick him up from school, DH and I were stuck in traffic after a Nathan-related meeting with the dev. ped. I was eight minutes late picking him up. When I saw him, he was standing with one of the 1st grade teachers. He came to me, with his eyes all red from crying. I apologized and asked if an ice-cream would help him feel better. (Yeah, that thinking probably explains why I'm 25 pounds overweight.) So, we all stopped by the ice-cream shop on the way home, and everything was fine.
Then, at toothbrushing time, he got all upset because he realized it was bedtime and he'd soon be waking up to go to school. He's been miserable at school lately, but he can't explain why. He looked like he was going to cry, so I held out my arms and told him a good cry would make him feel better. He went into this big thing about how only babies can cry. Luckily (?) he banged his knee shortly after that, and he let it all out, and told me about all kinds of stresses at school. I just feel so sad for him. He's not treated badly or anything like that, but it's just stressful. He doesn't know what to do a lot of the time. He said, "And apparently I get distracted easily, because I only did page one of my math test." He also said he likes resource because he can do his work.
I asked if he gets along with the teacher okay, and he said yes, so that's good.
I just feel really sad. I want to help him, and I'm not sure how.

((((HUGS)))) for you and for David! School can be such a hard thing in their lives! Weston had an awful 2nd grade year. Then a very very different teacher in 3rd grade made all the difference in the world. She got AS and Weston! she adapted for his and other kids in the classroom. I hope you're able to help him reduce the stress of school in his life!
