Daytrana Patch?

Hi All,

We visited the doctor this week to discuss meds. She recommended the Daytrana patch to help with impulsivity and inattention. She said it may have some impact but wouldn't be a "miracle". After reading up on side effects, I feel nervous. Has anyone tried it? The active ingredient is methlyphenedate. This drug comes in other forms, but for us the patch would be great because there wouldn't be a pill to struggle over.

The more rare side effects can involve tics. They said that is usually only in children with a predisposition to them.....that would have come out sooner or later anyway.

She also said it might not help with the aggression we are frustrated with. She said a low dose of Risperdol might help, if we wanted to try that later on, but that can have more potential side effects. The aggression is not severe but is impossible to curb. For example, DS might walk by DD and shove her for no apparent reason. He then finds it highly amusing and is impossible to redirect. He will do this with unfamiliar children too, if he is in that mood. UGH.

Any thoughts?

We've not used Daytrana, but did use Adderall for a short time. I found it made DD (5) more obsessive.

We did use Risperdal with DD. It was a wonder drug. . . for 5 months. After about 5 months it fizzled out and we couldn't up the dosage. Her dr said it has a reputation for wearing out in some kids. She recently talked to me about abilify. It's more expesive than risperdal, but doesn't have the same reputation for fizzing out. we haven't really tried it yet as I want to see how DD is without meds before I put her on it. she hasn't been off meds for a year, so I want to see what our real problems are before I figure out if the Abilify is worth the money.

Hope this helps. I know medicating any child is a difficult desicion.

Hi Chrissy!

We had Nick on Methylphenidate, which is basically Ritalin, in the pill form (Metadate CD) for his ADHD for a short while after he was dx'd back in March and he did great on it.
