Dental visit advice?

Eric (4) just had his first successful dental visit today. We tried once before and had a truly terrible experience, despite the fact that the guy considers himself a special needs pediatric dentist. Well, I think his idea of how treat special needs children was formed in the stone ages, interested in teeth, no sensitivity to people, but I digress.
Anyway, we found a great dentist, very sensitive to ASD issues. Turns out DS needs 3 fillings (guilt, guilt). If your children have had fillings, did you use "laughing gas," total sedation, just local anesthesia? This dentist recommends trying the gas first. She thinks he is too oral defensive to have just the local, but is also worried that he won't accept the mask for the gas. Although I think if we social-story it he'll be ok. We have a Dora goes to the dentist book where she has a cavity filled.
Any thoughts? Sedation seems extreme, but I get her point and she could do all 3 at once that way. It's just he has such terrible reactions to sedatives.
Also wondered your thoughts on what the filling should be made from, besides not mercury.

Ds always had just a local and did fine but he was always good about going to the dentist. (even though he's horrible about brushing, has very sensitive gums, and get chewed out each time, lol) Sorry that's probably not much help. As far as the fillings just make sure they aren't metal. Sending him lots of postitive thoughts+++++++++++

Thanks, Paula, that is good to know. She wants to use the gas just to relax him too, she just didn't know if he'd be upset by the mask. We're going to try the gas and see how it goes. If it works, it sounds like your experience and do them on separate visits. If not, we'll think about sedation, I guess. But it is helpful to know that your daughter is orally defensive and could handle this, maybe Eric might too.
I loved this dentist, wish I could go there! She had cool sunglasses for him in case the light bothered him. She had earplugs if he wanted, although none of her instruments was noisy, but he did use the sunglasses. She was so gentle, patient, let him have breaks. Showed him everything she was going to do before she did it, even let him squirt her plants with the water thingy! I really liked her and trust she'll do the same great job with the fillings.

Thanks for the positive thoughts, Samantha. We go back in about a week for filling no. 1.

I think that's the key right there. Having someone you like and trust as your dentist.
