I just wanted to say that Eric had his first filling with the new great dentist and it went great. This lady is amazing to me. All her rooms are decorated with different themes, so she put Eric in the "planet room" which he of course adored. Last time she gave us an old mask to practice putting on, so he could get used to it for the laughing gas.

So, she has these cute covers for the nosepiece and Eric got to pick the color. She also has the mask and her gloves scented to cover the latex smell. She had the super cool sunglasses again (to block out the light) for Eric. He accepted the laughing gas fine, she held the mask above his face a bit, so he got a whiff, before she slowly put it on him. He was relaxed but alert. She asked him if he needed breaks. She didn't even need to use local anaesthesia (she did give him a gel to numb the gum, but he was so ok she never gave the shot.)

This lady totally rocks, as far as I am concerned. I wish she could spread the word to the peds. She said she never set out to specialize in autism kids, it just kind of evolved, but her approach is great for any kid. There was a little girl there who was tiny for her age, maybe age 4 but looked 2. Dentist asked if she would feel better in her car seat. Little one said yes, so she strapped the car seat in the dental chair and girlfriend was a happy camper. This lady is my kind of gal!

Got two more fillings to go! Word to the wise. If you have not gone to a dentist yet, check them out totally first. We didn't with the first one and he was a nightmare. If we had gone to our heroine first, we would never have had a problem. I'd advise visiting the office (s) and checking it all out. Seems silly, but with an orally defensive kid, it made the difference between day and night.

DH said he thinks we need the gas at home. It would probably help all of us! LOL!

Yay! I'm glad you found such a great dentist. It truly does make all the difference.

It's funny because I just took Duncan to the dentist for the first time on Friday. Ian and I have been together there, but Duncan still hadn't been and he's now five. My dentist, whom I really like, is not there right now, he's fighting cancer. But the other dentist was super, super nice. We really lucked out because I had no idea there was a change. Duncan did really, really well, but I think it's because Ian actually likes to go to the dentist and was telling him before hand how cool it is. Plus, Duncan has been to the office with us when we were getting our check-ups. Duncan really loved the raspberry flavored polish! He also liked getting the glow in the dark toothbrush, althrough he won't actually use it -- we use electric toothbrushes.

Don't you love that laughing gas! I used to look forward to fillings as a kid. My parents picked a good dentist who used it and I've always been grateful because I'm not afraid of the dentist. My husband....now he had some scarey stories. He still has to take anti-anxiety pills before his visits, and his dentist (different from mine) is really wonderful and patient. Even getting his teeth cleaned is an experience for him. It really is important to get kids, especially our kind of kids, on the right start with a good dentist.

sign me up for some of that gas!

I am glad the appt went well. A good understanding practiciner makes such a huge difference and seems to be increasingly rare. Your dentist sounds like a true find and a total "keeper".
