Diagnosis is in.

I spoke with our Dr. yesterday and she said she has diagnosed our son with Aspergers. This really is not a surprise to me at all. She answered a lot of my questions too. She is writing up the official diagnosis and a rough draft on her treatment recomendations, then she will have my dh and I come in and go over what therapies she thinks he needs and what we may want to add. Then she will finalize the paper work and we will start the process at school. She said when dealing with the school to go in and ask for the world and hope for the continent. Anyway, I feel a sigh of relief because now I feel like I am on my way to helping my son.

In reading all the posts here, I think I am going to need to make some changes in my lifestyle. I am currently involved in a lot of community based things, plus I work FT. I think I may need to pull out of a few things to devote the time we need to our son.

Well, I am outta here till Monday evening. My dh and I haven't taken a trip without kids in over 10 years, we are going to Daytona beach for the weekend and I must say I am in need of this.

Thank you all so much for all your advise and I am going to keep on needing it!

Melissa,

I'm glad you have what you need now to help your son. I hope you have a great vacation. What a perfect time to take one!

Melissa,

It is with mixed feelings that I welcome you as an "official" member of the board.

I totally expected my son's DX, yet it still came as a kick in the teeth, and floored me for about two weeks. I hope you don't have the same experience, and manage to have fun on your trip.

As for lifestyle changes: My advice is to make no sudden moves or give in to kneejerk reactions. It is doubtful that anything major is needed in the next few weeks, or that anything will change significantly. You have time to let this new knowledge sink in, to research and to plan. Yes. Some of us have needed to change things around in our lives, but every family and situation is diferent, and you need to do what you think is best for *your* family and circumstances, taking everyone and everything into account.

Remember that your son and family has not changed. Only your knowledge has changed. You were always the mother of an Aspergers kid. You just didn't (officially) know it!

My 2¢...

What great timing for a mini-vacation.......clear your mind and have a great relaxing time.

I'm glad that the official diagnosis is going to give you the ammunition that you need to get the school to provide your son with the resources and services he needs.

Have a great vaca!!

As much as I knew he had AS, it still feels weird knowing "officially" that he has it. I just feel like all the times he was having trouble and we were punighing him, the poor kid probably couldn't help it. I also feel a certain amount of nervousness that we won't have a great teacher next year. We have been so extremely fortunate this year with his teacher. She is absolutely a GEM! We couldn't have asked for better. She did email the asst. principal telling her our son's condition and what type of teacher would work best for him and asked for their assistance in placing him for next year. I hope they do well for my son.

As far as making any drastic decisions, I will hold off until I know what we need to do.

Thanks for your input.

You poor lady.....you have my luck......I swear - if it weren't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all. You finally get a vacation and hubbie gets sick.....yup, sounds familar.
