We had already done tons of research and were expecting the PDD-NOS dx, so we weren't surprised when Sylvia received it.

We did get a second opinion (and a 3rd, and a 4th...) because our oldest ASD DD's orginaly dx was NOT ASD. It was waaaay off base in the catastrophic CP range. When she was born they said she was going to be a vegitable for her entire life... if she lived. She was born 8 weeks premature and most of the drs had no hope. Our family dr didn't agree with 'specialists' though and helped us keep pushing (both the drs and her).

A lot of her traits and milestones were obscurred by how incredibly premie she was. She eventually got a dx of 'HFA, TS, and MLMR en comorbid' at age 7. This we agree with.

EI is early intervention........our county runs the early intervention programs (ST, OT etc.) for under 5 years of age and then the school district is responsible for those programs

yes, and in some ways it seems we are always in for more oppinions on this or that, lol.

Autism spectrum disorders are just not clear cut and thier are often comorbids that go with so diagnosis is not always a static thing. We specifically saught a second oppinion after the first neuro because he diagnosed dyspraxia, hypotonia, ADD and language disorder but denied any ASD. By that point we knew she was on the spectrum so we asked for a second oppinion. She was soon diagnosed PDD-NOS

However, in the process of moves and various evaluations for schools, state services, and new symptoms Cait has been diagnosed autistic, autism spectrum, Aspergers and currently Asspergers and Epilepsy. She also has chronic tics, etc. All on the autism spectrum. These aren't 2nd oppinions that I have saught but often new evaluations need to be done for this or that.

Mike started the diagnostic process at 3 with lots of people saying hmmmm maybe this or that. When he was dx'ed ADHD at 4 we didn't really question it but eventually had to take him to a psychiatrist who diagnosed ADHD, anxiety, ocd and something else (don't remember). I didn't question that either because everyone kept bringing up autism and I didn't want it to be that. Finally when he was 7 it was obvious that we couldn't deny it anymore and we took him for another eval and he was diagnosed AS.

Currently he is starting the process to go to the diagnostic center. There is question of whether he is more autism than AS and if he has full blown comorbids and what they are. He has lots of comorbid symptoms.

Thank you. When his school evaluates him, will they also diagnose him? I guess I didn't think that was their place to diagnose.

They wil give him an 'educational diagnosis' which is not the same a medical dx. the ed dx is for the purpose of customizing his educational needs durring his academic career. A medical dx is obtained from a dr via medical/psychiatric eval.
