Do your kids have ankle problems

Kyle and Hannah both have sore ankles/heels on the right. Kyle gets a sore ankle every yr about this time. The weather warms up and he starts running around at recess (a VERY good thing). They also start doing more track type things in PE. They are both toe walkers and have very tight leg muscles. I need to get them streatching again. I was just wondering if this is a common thing or just a Kyle and Hannah thing.

Samantha,

My guess is that it is a result of toe-walking; or more specifically, increased activity after a winter of toe-walking. Peter and I both toe walk, but don't get the tight muscle thing, probaby because we both have low tone.

HOWEVER: as a toe walker, I can say that the impact on one's heel if one runs heel-toe (I usually don't) is significant, and I guess that if your kids have been off their heels and are now doing a lot more heel-toe running, there will be a several impacts: The leg mucles may get sore becuase they are being used a different way. The heels can become sore because of the impact -they probably softened over the winter as well. Ankles are probably impacted due to different angles of force and higher impact activities.

If you are really concerned, you may want to contact your ped about a PT consult. I know ASD "stuff" generally isn't covered by health insurance, but pain should be covered! a PT will should be able to give you some good pointers to help them now, and to prevent a recurrence next year.

Also, you may want to check out different sneaker brands. The more expensive ones generally offer better arch support and more cushioning for the heel. See if you can try on a few adult ones yourself first, to test for coushioning and support, and then try to find the same or very similar in the kids' sizes. For trying on boy's sneakers: ladies' size 7 is roughly equal to boys' size 5.
