I was home today, so I watched it. It was not very informative, and frankly, really stupid. As Crystal said, it outlined one aspect of AS, and presented a negative view of people with it and of the life of a parent of someone with it. Phil's intro stated that "most people with Asperger's are non-violent" then he proceeds to show news clips about a kid in CA who supposedly had AS who killed a few people, Great that's what everybody needs to see.

The kid did yell and curse at his parents.. but they were yelling and cursing right back. Why didn't Phil pick up on that? Usually they make the parents look like chumps on these kind of shows.. I was suprised to see he didn't do that here.

I actually laughed when Phil referred to some specialist in the audience from some place called Brain Matters, and they compared the brain scan of some random aspergers brain with the "normal" brain. So what? Now this Dr. is going to do a brain scan on the kid and they will develop some "brain based therapy", or maybe he called it "brain based strategies" for his problem? HUH? That was it. No one ever explained what the "brain based therapy" might be? Drugs? A lobotomy? Brain transplant? C'MON! And then the parent's were hugging each other and crying, like this was the answer they had been looking for all the time.. a brain scan.. thank you Dr. Phil.. what a real joke.

They mentioned that the kid was dx at 6, but no mention of what therapies he had, how well it worked, was he mainstreamed at school, resources available to those with a new dx, nothing, nada.

If you missed it, you didn't miss much, imo.

I totally agree with you Renee! I saw my child on that screen-the rages, the out of control person who has no clue on how to deal with it! I could very well have been that mother on that stage. And there was one day that I was so frustrated with my ds that I looked straight at him and told him I hated him...then I had a total break down! Of course I have been dealing with Jake's issues for almost 13 yrs-he didnt start getting bad rages until he was in 4th grade. In 5th grade he punched a younger kid for looking at him, last yr(6th grade)a girl was standing in front of the water fountain and he head butted her out of the way. When he was in 4th/5th grade he would often say he wished he wasn't born and he hated his life. Jake is very oppositional, short tempered and you never know when the rage will take over. He could rage just because someone is doing something the wrong way or not his way. Don't get me wrong my boy is the kindest most caring young man and I love him with all my heart and soul, he just doesn't always know how to control his emotions and then they cause an explosion.
