We have been so upset after seeing the Dr. Phil Show & how Asperger's was portrayed. We,too, have a 9 yr. old son. He was diagnosed with AS at age 4. Now anyone or everyone who knows us will be fearful of him. It is a lonely road as it is but Dr. Phil has made it even worse for us now. Our son is not violent as this boy was shown to be. There are obviously other issues with this child on the show than AS. We are so shocked that Dr. Phil, with his knowledge would not do more research to show the true picture of AS. We are beyond upset.. probably more sad than anything else at this point. It is difficult enough that people don't fully understand AS so his show has erased everything we have taught neighbors, friends, relatives on & on & on. We recently moved from the midwest to the northwest so we have been honest with everyone about our son having AS. How do we reach Dr.Phil anyway? He needs to have our children on his program to show how wonderful they are. Does he realize how intelligent these children are & now the damage he has done to them?! Our son talks openly about AS & knows he has this. As our wonderful son's mom, I'm in tears! I'm 'babbling' & 'rambling' but we are both so very, very upset.
From, Sue & Jim who are so very proud to be Brandon's Mom & Dad!!

Has anyone mentioned that they are now afraid of your son? Has anyone treated you are him differently from this show or are you assuming that is going to be thier reaction.

I can totally understand why you're upset. I was very confused by the show. It didn't portray my understanding of Aspergers' at all. It seemed to make these kids out to be ticking time bombs, which is not really the case. I was shocked that Dr. Phil didn't show a broaded perspective. I'm not even sure if Asperger's is the correct diagnosis for that child......... I'm sorry this has affected your family in such a negative way. Hopefully, others who are more familiar with the disorder will see through the show as we have. Take care, and don't stop trying to educate others.
