My DS, Noah (9) had his first group therapy/social skills session yesterday and it felt so good! My DS has Aspergers and we found a psychiatric social worker who is himself an Aspie at the University of Ill. College of Medicine Psych. Dept. where we live. He runs a group for Aspie kids every Tuesday at 5:30. It is one hour long and last night there were 6 kids (all boys). I thought my son might be nervous, anxious or something but he was very comfortable and participated the whole time.

It is an amazing thing to see a whole group of kids just like yours and to actually meet and physically talk to another parent with an Aspie kid.

It made me feel hopeful and so glad that we are actually doing something concrete to help my son. It also made me feel less alone - It's sort of the same feeling I get when I read this board. It was a good day!

Yay for Noah! Chase (8 w/AS) has been going to a social skills group for nearly six months and it has helped him so much. He has a mix of boys and girls but he is the only dx AS kid in the group but I have my suspicions about a few of them. He looks so forward to going on Thursday nights and his teachers have really noticed improvements. Vicky

Bobby is in a similar group and waiting in the lobby with the other parents is like therapy for us!

ACK! You guys reminded me I am supposed to be getting my monkeys signed up for a group local to here.

They started with thier play therapist 2 years ago. Mike still sees her now with a little buddy we bring along (a friends mostly NT son, lol. He is quirky, gifted and ADHD but not ASD though there were questions once upon a time). Cait hasn't seen her in a while other than on special occasions. She started with individual, then with another girl. Currently Cait has social skills class in school daily but it is all boys.

Starting them in a formal social skills group was the next step and I was supposed to get that in place to start this summer. Dadgumit.

But CONGRATS on the first session. I love my other Aspie parents that I know. It is theraputic.
