Dang that is what I thought. Many of those meds can mess with your liver and regular blood work has to be done. Cait has to have it done rarely for her seizure meds. Trileptal isn't as bad as most but she did have to get one near the beginning and then I think like yearly after that.
My friends ds used to have to go monthly for it when he was on a bunch including a high dose of depakote for BP. Of all the things they have to put up with, adding this is no fun.
Evelyn, With Sravan's surgeries( 5 to date), none of the numbing med, pain cocktail helped. So for the last surgery, when we had to do the blood work, I talked to Sravan for 2 days. We went thru the procedure (dry run) at home. I think the fear is more than the pain, it is the whole thing about sitting on a chair with needle pointing at you. I also talked to the lady and she was really nice. We did tell him that it would hurt, but it is like an ant bite. I did pinch him a little, so he could visualize what it would like. But go with the social story option, it worked for Sravan. This was the same kid, kept running and we had to bring him back.
Hi Evelyn, Oddly enough when Nick had to have blood drawn, he actually watched them do it. If you can call ahead and explain your situation to the lab, tell them to please get you in right away without waiting. Nick screams bloody murder for shots, but for the blood draw, he was ok with it. Add to it, he had a WONDERFUL phlebotomist who really knew her s**t with kids. I didnt say much the whole time and let her do her thing. I was more nervous than him, but I didnt show it because he feeds off my emotions. So if you can keep calm yourself that will help :). Better to give him a brief explanation than a drawn out one. If the rubber band they tie around his arm bothers him, have him wear a long sleeve shirt you can pull up so there is some padding there. Nick was fascinated watching her do the needle and the vials. He didnt even cry. Also, instead of asking him about the pain, focus on how well he is doing. Tell him how proud you are of him, even if he is upset, yes it will hurt, but dont mention it, tell him what a big boy he is being, that you understand, but he is being such a big boy and it will be over soon. Also, I gave Nick a dose of Tylenol before the visit so he would have any pain, same as before shots too. I have to take Nick in on Friday for his 5 year checkup and 2 shots, I am dreading that visit! I would rather have to have blood drawn!! Christine
hi, my son has just had his appendix out which while they are trying to find out what was wrong, my son was very scared of having his bloods taken.they where great.they put what they call magic cream on the back of his hands which numbed his hands.they left it on for 1 hour and it kept the hand numb for 5 hours.it really worked.we read a wheres wally book while he had his tests and he didn,t feel a thing.do they do this at your hospital?we thought he would freak out but he was so brave.
