Well, I don't know the sciences behind it, but I take epsome salt baths with LOTS of salts and always feel wuch better (more cognatively awake) for it. I started taking daily 'sits baths' about two years ago when my physicl disabilities started getting really bad and one day (when I wasn't really awake) just dumped a bunch of salts into the water. Been doing it that way ever since. Don't think I use quite 8 cups though, more like 4-5, but I'm willing to try anything twice! **wink**

LR,

I've been doing epsom salt baths for the boys for about a year now. I haven't seen language changes, but I have seen a detox type effect on it. I add about a cup daily. I believe it was on the enzymestuf website where i first read about it. it was about 1 cup per 60 lbs of child. Anyway, something about mag sulfate being a detoxifier. There is so much good stuff about epsom that I found it amazing.

You definately need to work up to it as you mentioned because some kids can have a hyper effect depending on how much they detox from it. So, some start with tablespoons at a time. I also read that you can do a foot bath/soak while they are doing homework. Some make a paste with the salt and apply that on exfoliated skin and so on.

I love this topic ;) Valerie

Thanks for the tip. We didn't really see anything from the epsom salt baths either. IF we ever get a lead free tub again so the kids can soak again I'll try the higher doses.

Funny, the one thing I have noticed with epsom salts baths are a calming effect. If Mike is horribly hyper in the evening I will have him take a salt bath. He will splash around in there forever and comes out MUCH calmer. I don't know if it is the salts or the hour of un interupted stimming. (he loves water plays and splashing in it. We can't let him go that long in the shower so now he has gotten into a routine of very short showers, lol)

I haven't noticed an immediate effect with Dave or whomever else take baths but I don't use them daily and just do it because I figure the extra good stuff in it is good for them.

I usually use 1-2 cups. I will add more and see what happens. Do you think this could have an effect on Mike's auditory comprehension/processing?

I bought some epsom salts to try with my DD but I haven't used them yet because she still takes baths with DS (they are 3 and 4 - I don't suppose some calming salts would hurt him though...maybe well try some tonight!

Nah, they won't hurt in my opinion. I stick both kids in the tub with the salts. And like renee, I find it does calm them both. I never found it made them hyper, although I started off slowly just in case. I use 1 cup with both boys in the tub together on average. And I do it every night.

With Mike I was doing it every night until I had to start teaching him how to shower himself. Now he probably has a bath a couple times a weeks when I see he is really hyper or stressed (lots of outbursts) and it helps. I think it is a combination of the salts, lots of un-interupted stim time as well as an extended break from the rest of us.

Dave gets it a few times a week. I hadn't really noticed with him but I haven't been keeping track. I will try him nightly and see if it helps some of the recent concerning behavior,

Emily gets them when she is sore or is having a problem with constipation (on occasion). It seems to help along with enzymes and acidolpholus.

Cait gets them when she requests a bath. Again if she is stressed and in a bad way I will recomend it and she always comes out a happier girl but then who amung us girls don't feel better if we are cranky and take a nice bath!

Malcolm LOVES baths and I have been using the epsom salts in his baths for several years, along with baby oil to keep his skin soft. He now spends long times under the water using his swim goggles and his snorkeling tube to breathe through, VERY restful! This does help him sleep. He probably takes a bath 3 - 4 nights a week.

But I have never used that much epsom salts, more like a half a cup. Last night, I upped the salts to a cup after reading this thread and I think I will gradually increase the salts and see how that goes. Why not?

Thanks, LR, ALWAYS interesting stuff you post...
