Dear Katherine,
That is just awful. Something similar happened in my son's school, too, also in the self-contained class.
I fervently believe that every action that schools take to make them "safer" creates a dangerous and stressful privacy.
I wish that all schools were like my sons' private school. They allow parents to come in whenever. There are two doors where parents can enter. They have to sign in on a computer. They have the choice to "drop off child(ren)", "pick up child(ren)" or simply "unlock door." I think that non-guardians do not have the "unlock door only" option. Each parent and any other adults authorized by the parents have unique PINs to get in. Parents are always welcome to walk in just to visit. If parents have a tendency to show up at a bad time or otherwise interfere with the program, the administrators request a conference and discuss it with the parents.
This, I believe is the very safeist school. And the very highest quality. It is also more likely that the teachers have the adult contact necessary to keep them energized and on their games.
By the way, the administration really supports the teachers, which gives them a lot of confidence in themselves, and the ability to innovate. For example, one of the teachers told me that she tried to give my son a really stern direction, which backfired. (Of course.) I have no doubt that many other teachers have tried and failed with
That is just really super scary to hear.
Ugh!

Katherine,
I don't blame you for being angry and upset. That something like this can happen in your own school

I was going to write somethign similar to Paula. Imagine that.
It is a horrible scary think to think this teacher was doing those things. HOWEVER, take comfort in knowing there are good people at his school that weren't going to just sit by and let something like that happen. I think it would add to my comfort level that if something happened at the school it was revealed and addressed.
Unfortunately, last year I had to report a teacher/aides for this kind of thing. The teacher was an intern and the aides basically ran the class. I only went in 1 time a week to do OT with some kids. Well one week they had taped this girls thumb with packaging tape to keep her from sucking it. They announced this to me like it was NO BIG DEAL. I was furious. I made sure it got off. My OT boss was in the next room in an IEP. Her and I discussed it and we reported teh class to the district special ed director. WELL a month later the intern was gone but for a variety of other reasons. The aides (who's idea this was in the first place) remained. That in particular nor nothing reportable ever happened in front of me again. The director was supposidly keeping an eye on it but it seemed taken care of in a rather hush hush/sweep it under the rug sort of way.
Point being it is good to know there are people at your school that are responsible and have the kids best interest at heart.

Thanks, everyone.
how awful! I'm glad that she was turned in several times, but how awful for the children and parents!
