Euan's assessment LOL
Find a Conversation

Had to share this because only fellow parents of ASD kids will 'get' why I found this so funny. Euan started high school this week along with another kid from his school, Scott, who has classic autism (and much higher support needs than Euan). We are good friends with Scott's parents and we are having them over for a BBQ this weekend.
I mentioned this to Euan. I told him how proud I was of him and how he'd coped with his first week (walking by himself to and from school, finding his way around, not losing his locker key or lunch card, remembering to eat lunch, remembering to bring his homework books home and do his homework, etc) and that maybe we should make a cake for him and Scott to celebrate their first week. He gave me this spiel, which was so classically Aspie I had to share it:
"Well, that's a really bad idea. Firstly, it hasn't been a week, we started back on Tuesday, so that's only four days, not a full week. Monday might be a huge disaster, we have PE that day, and I already know that this is not going to go well. Also, I haven't had any homework graded yet, so it might not be any good. Plus, I know you said you were pleased I'd agreed to think about joining a club, but I don't think you should reward me for that. I can tell you I am *thinking* about anything, but if I don't actually *do* it, then that's just me misleading you. You should really wait and see if I join the drama club or something before you make me a cake. Also, if you make me cake *now*, what motivation have a got to carry on doing well? You should maybe wait and make me a cake at the end of term. Also, what kind of cake? is it chocolate cake? because I only really like chocolate cake, I don't like that sponge cake you make. Actually, I don't really like cake that much, I'd rather have something else. Can we go to the science museum instead of having a cake? Also, you said you were cross that I had lost my coat, AND you said I should try and make my own snack and I didn't. So that's not really 'doing well', is it?"
!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm going to make him a cake anyway, ungrateful stinker :-)

Funny!
That kind of conversation reminds me of Adam, 7. I jokingly told him I was going to sell him to the gypsies. He said "Well, I need to bring my toys.... and diapers." I asked him why he would need diapers. He said "in case anyone has a baby... or do gypsies lay eggs?"
This is so funny. I can just picture him standing there, telling you all this stuff (while you are trying to do a million other things).
It's exactly the kind of thing my son would say.

ROTFL
He's a piece of work, isn't he? Classic Aspie response.
Glad things went so well this week. You must be bursting with pride, even if Euan doesn't think he's quite there yet.
