(For those of you that remember I was very stressed out about Euan's difficulty in transitioning to high school and having to make new friends, particularly as his birthday is approaching he couldn't think of any friends to invite to his party).
I am so pleased and proud of him! We had a long discussion about what constituted a friend, and after I had explained that nobody expects him to have made lots of friends within a few weeks of starting a new school, but he just needs to think of people that he likes, that he can talk to at recess etc, whose company he enjoys, he managed to, off his own bat, think of 8 people who fitted into this category. So we wrote out invitations, practised handing them out at school, and he did it on his own, and so far 4 of them have said yes! (it's a karting party, with pizza)
AND bless them, the school, after some enquiries from me, have sent home a two page list of social activities/clubs that take place during lunch time and after school. (I think this would have happened anyway and they were waiting for the kids to settle in for the first couple of weeks). BUT there is something every day including a drama club and a physics club so Euan is over the moon. But also very very anxious because to join these clubs you have to 'just turn up' to one of the sessions. Euan is now very anxious because he doesn't know exactly what that means, and is very very nervous about doing it and getting it wrong and being embarrassed. But OFF HIS OWN BAT he has found a solution. He is going to talk to his ASD support worker in his weekly session about it and ask her advice for
