Kwym, when Cian was being assesssed for ASD by the psych I asked about eye contacy=t and was told "not much." It floored me as I thought he made great eye contact....just shows you....what do we know....other than the Mommy gut, lol.

We had the same situation with my kids' ADD symptoms. It took me awhile to recognize that the kids DID have ADD since I'm so accustomed to dealing with it that I sometimes forget that it's not "normal." Even knowing that my kids have ADD, sometimes I don't recognize how bad it is. One day recently, it took 9yo ds 15 minutes to get his lunch in his backpack, even with me repeatedly reminding him to walk in the kitchen (10 steps away), get his lunch, and put it in the backpack. He'd turn around and have already forgotten what he was supposed to do. I must have told him a dozen times in 15-min. (That was one of my "ah-ha" moments that maybe the kids really did need medication.)
Anyway, don't feel silly about not noticing your ds flat expression. I think it's very normal to get so accustomed to our kids' personalities that we don't see their traits as different unless the kids are in a setting where we see it stand out more, or unless someone else points out the differences to us.
My son always goes from a serious face while sucking his thumb to being super over expressive !!! Like he can't regulate a happy medium.
