Family Letter Re: Dx
Find a Conversation

My ds was dx with pdd-nos last Dec when he was 4.5 years old. He has a lot of Asperger's qualities and may fit into that in the future.
I would like a letter to family that rarely sees my ds (we are having a family reunion this summer). Some of these people we see up to four times a year and some once a year or so. My ds has been special needs since about 10 mos with hypotonia and sensory integration dysfunction. No one really knows what we have been through although I always tried to talk about his therapy people seemed uncomfortable and the conversation sorta ended.
I saw the "Grandparents" letter and may use some of it but it wasn't quite right. Anyone feel free to share your letters to the family? I will be using some information from a book I am reading now called Asperger's Syndrome in young children. I just feel so passionate yet don't even know where to begin.
At my dh's nephew's college grad there where some comments that upset me very much and I would just like these a$$holes to get a grip with what we are dealing with. I would also like the kindhearted ones to know too (lol).
TIA!
Molly

Hi Molly
I am sorry to hear the family isn't as understanding. As for the college grad, well they better just get a grip.
First off, this disorder is SO misunderstood, I get that from mhy DH's family and thank God I hardly ever see them.
I am unfamiliar with the "letter" you speak of, BUT since you are in a bind, I'd find some real basic info on PDD which defines some of your childs behaviors/delays.
IF they are TRULY as smart as you say, they'll get it. As for conversation, don't talk about PDD unless it's brought up first. My SIL is really weird to me when I talk to her about her own nephew.
I basically don't care what they think.
good luck
Nora

this is the letter I emailed and mailed to all friends and family (all but you here on the board since you know more than what's in this letter lol) last May...wow it seems impossible I sent this out over a year ago....
Good Evening Everyone!
I trust that this email finds you all in good health and happiness. So much has happened during the month of May, I thought I better write to you all to get you caught up!
On May 2, just 4 weeks ago today, Isaac was officially diagnosed with Aspergers Syndrome. AS is classified as a Pervasive Developmental Disorder and currently is also considered an Autism Spectrum Disorder. AS is very mild, but does effect Isaac’s ability to maintain friendships, have appropriate conversations, transition (or “move on”) from one thing to the next, among other things. He is teachable and all of the reports reflect he has a very high IQ. I am very optimistic that all of his current deficits can be overcome and that eventually, through God’s grace and Isaac’s perseverance, no one will even be able to tell he once had an AS diagnosis. I truly feel he can recover from this, even though right now in the medical field, autism “recovery” is very controversial.
During the last month, I have been attending meetings, making phone calls, and reading books until my eyes are blurry. Isaac will be attending
