Final Math grade for the year

I just decided to check on Cait's grade for her math review final for the year. That test which should measure what she has learned the entire year and (drum roll please......)

She got a 50%. WOW! ISn't that GREAT! BOY she has learned SO MUCH this year! (ok, I am done with my sarcasm now). I had to talk with her tonight about the possibility of taking summer school which hasn't even been offered for academics. They offered ESY but the one for her is a social skills program. This would be different.

Needless to say she IS NOT thrilled. It is that or RSP math midway through next year.

I'm sorry to hear they did such a poor job teaching her. And now she'll have to pay with her summer. Its not fair.

Well, Mikes autism specialist will be glad to know that I am just gonna "go with the flow". It was a social story/skill of the week they were working on. Complete with hand gestures. So I am "Goin with the flow".

It rots and I am angry but it is accurate to about what she has learned this year in math and the poor grade, though it rots, will give me neccessary ammunition to use next year. At the end of this year we had math objectives added to her IEP. I may set up an appointment myself to talk to the RSP math teacher and have her go that route if she will learn what she needs too.

I have no grand dillusions. She didn't get my math sense and it isnt her strong point. She won't be going to college for Math but she needs to be able to do it functionally. She needs to know how to balance a check book, what an interest rate is and why it is important. How to budget, plan for things, etc. She may need some math in college for her future as an animal cop but I don't think it would be calculus and she certainly won't pass anything without a good foundation.

I haven't decided on summer school yet. Have to contact the teacher and see what it entails. 10:1 there won't be an aide there or the AS support teacher so taking a summer class would likely be a waste of time anyway.

It is just another one of those things. It has been hitting me lately as she hits middle school that she is going to be one of those kids who's issues are life long. I mean I always knew it but I hoped she would be one who could pass and make it independently but she will likely need some supports for a while.

Did hear about a cool program for when she is an adult though. At least a transitional one during early adulthood that teaches them all those independent living skills.

HEY but I had more great news. I got mike to get a REAL haircut (ok by me, but it looks sooooo darn cute!) Cait did too and they look great. It has been such an issue to get both of them to do it. More an issue of change than a sensory one but it still was a major battle won for mom's side.

let's CELEBRATE the haircuts!

That is SUCH a major issue around here, although for Isaac it's more of an auditory thing (outside haircuts work a little better - I might have to really creative in the winter lol).

That's great about the haircuts, Renee. I'm actually doing a little haircut experiment right now. I decided NOT to take Kyle for a haircut untill he asks me too or untill school is ready to start back up, which ever comes first. LOL He usually likes his hair very short. Its already quite long, it grows so fast, and looks awlful. Dh, my parents, and sister think I've lost it. I'm just really curious if he'll ever ask me to take him for a hair cut.
