This weekend was "Wintrop Days". Wintrop is this tiny town 10 miles over where my neices go to school. Its also where Michelle Monaghan is from, the actress who played Tom Cruise's wife in MI3. My sister was watching the kids yesterday so dh and I could have a date. She took them to the parade. They usually hate parades. This one happens to be very short. She said they did great and had fun. They even picked up candy that was thrown, something that usually they refuse to do or causes a meltdown. Then as we were on our way home my sister calls and says Kyle and Hannah WANT to go to the fireworks. boy were we surprised. Last yr they wouldn't go to the 4th of July fireworks. In the past we've always made them go because dh & I really enjoy it but last yr we gave in and stayed home. We met them at the park for the fireworks. We sat very close and right next to the van blasting the music. No one covered their ears (except me, lol). They loved it. YEA!!!

AWESOME!
How much FUN! I love when we can finally do those fun family things that the "A" thing typically ruins. Last year it was sea world and it was for the whole day and we were successful. What great fun.
My kids kind of were initiated under fire for fireworks a few years ago. We moved a block from the park that has the biggest 4th of July works in the county. We decided to walk to the park with some friends. Well the dad used to work for the park and knew the "best" place to watch the fireworks. We were practically underneath. Closest you could get that they would allow safely. I did NOT know that was where we were going. You have to lay down to look up at them.
It was INCREDIBLY loud and your whole body shakes. I thought they would totally freak and they did thier best ever! Way better there than they did at the other end of the park the year before. I covered ears a couple times but now everyyear it is thier highlight. We walk with the same family to the same spot and end up dusting the ashes off us on the way home.
Go figure. I will never figure them out.

The first time when they don't know what to expect is the hardest. Loud noise when you know what direction it will be coming from and what it is about and what will happen nest ... not a problem here.
Malcolm has also been building up his tolerance for big, fast roller coasters these past few years. Amusement parks are so loud and jostling and stinky, but he knows what to expect, plus (just like his dad) he is a speed junky.
The upset-down twirly ones bother and frighten him more, but now I see him watching those intently when we go to Coney Island. And I know what this means. He is figuring them out and he will work up his courage and this year or next year he will start going on them. THOSE he can wait for his dad to do with him and pals, cuz even tho I LOVED those when younger, now that I am aging ... I get physically sick. Darn it.
Malcolm loves fireworks, too. In fact, I should find where there will be good fireworks at a beach this summer so we can go, spend time at the beach, hang out until fireworks. Sounds lovely.
