first day of middle school today

Today is Kyle's frist day of middle school. He is excited about it. I can't tell you how happy that makes me. He hasn't looked forward to school since kindergarten.

Yesterday he had MS orientation for 1.5hrs. He looked kind of nervous when I dropped him off. He wouldn't make eye contact with me or say good bye. That made me nervous. But when I got there to pick him up he was beaming. He showed me his locker. He knew exactly where to go. I don't have to worry about him getting lost. (the MS is a weird shaped building with a circular part that can be very confusing) We got his locker set up and installed his special pad lock with push buttons that is easier than the dial kind. He walked me around and showed me his classrooms and introduced me to his language arts teacher. He had already memorized which friends had which periods with him. He is ready and I hope he continues to do so great. (his aide is not ready and was looking rather frazzled. Kyle said she was confused, lol. at this point she needs him more than he needs her. )

We have our first IEP meeting this afternoon. I haven't gotten a meeting notice. Not a good sign! I don't even know who will be there.

That's great that he had such a good day. My DS is starting middle school on Friday, (7th grade) we go to open house tonight to meet his teachers and see where is classes are going to be. He is very excited. It has been a rough couple of years with school so we're hoping he can get a fresh start! He is very excited to see who is going to be in his classes and what his teachers are going to be like. I hope they are nice and understanding. I haven't gotten any IEP information or letters yet, i'm hoping they are more on board this year at this school than last year. well good luck and I hope it's a great year for both of you :)

Good luck at todays IEP meeting. I hope it all goes really really well and the lack of the notice was a rare oversight.

Let us know how the first day actually went!

Kyle had a great first day. He even made plans to have a friend come over and play friday after school!!! Oh my gosh that is just so awesome. So far he loves it. He has his schedule down pat and even memorized some of his friends schedules. He knows his way around. Everyone said he looked really happy and confident. They saw him interacting with his peers before classes started. Couldn't be better. Yes, this is his honeymoon period. He always does well at first. Honestly though he's never done this well & I'm going to relish every moment. He even remembered to bring home his lunch box. Now that's an accomplishment. :)

The IEP meeting was a surprise. I thought since I didn't get a meeting notice that they weren't taking it seriously. I honestly was expecting just the sped. teacher and principal to show. I was dead wrong. Everyone was there all the way down to the shop teacher! The IT teacher didn't look to happy about being there, lol. We went through the whole IEP. Lots of good questions were asked. We got everything updated. I was there 3 hours but it was very well spent. Everyone (minus the IT teacher) seemed really eager to learn about AS and very willing to do what ever Kyle needs. I think I might just relax a little now. Is that safe? ;)

Thanks for the reminder. I need to deal with a middle school IEP meeting too. They were supposed to have it the first 5 days of the school year and no notice of any sort yet. Obviously I have been off, and I was also trying to be kind and flexible. Oye.
