Hi all,
Anyone got any ideas how to get vegetables into my kids? Jake hasn't eaten a vegetable in about 2 years and his diet consists of chicken nuggets, apple sauce, yogurt, cereal(dry),pizza, grilled cheese, hot dogs and milk.I can't deal with one more mealtime struggle getting both of them to try something new. They both like fruit so I load them up with fruit everyday. Anyone got any receipes or suggestions? Also, how can I get this issue addressed in his next IEP meeting or do I even have to wait untill then(April)?
Teresa
TIA,
Teresa

I mix up pancakes in the food processor with carrot in them. The kids love them and have no idea they have purreed carrot in them. You could also check out the You tube video about the SCD diet by philcommander. He talks about how he got his kid to eat veggies. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YRCiBLk7vIE

Can you chop up some vegetables on the pizza?

Also, what about "sweet" stuff with veggies in it--like carrot cake, zucchini bread,

I feel your pain. We being vegetarian and Sravan hating fruit, our diet was even worse. I had to put Sravan on Ensure for extra protien. He also started acting up due to lack of sugar level.

take care,

I should have said that I think Jakes issues with food are more visual but sometimes tactile. Pizza has to be cut in perfect squares with no cheese dropping of the side.We went through a stage recently where I had to feed him again because he was afraid anything would fall on him but I'm trying to make him feed himself again. Ella is more tactile food wise. She did do a feeding program when she was younger which helped her a lot. I just wish I could get an OT through my insurance that would do it for Jake.
Thanks for all the hints,

We had lots of the same issues with Cait. Fortunately my kids have always enjoyed veggies from the time they were first eating finger foods so they always had some.

However, there were a number Cait would still not eat. She is getting much better about trying new things as she gets older. It was a long process though.

Typically, I start with something which is close to something they may already eat and present in a similar manner. Present it when they are hungry but not REAL hungry and do it in a low key way at snack. If he tries it make a big deal. You can sneak it in by making if for yourself and just letting him try a bite of it because you like it sooooo much. Make sure it is something you think he may like and is similar to what he eats already.

Once you have success with trying a few new foods then he will likely be more receptive to trying more. Always praise the attempt and never force huge amounts. I taste is fine.

Soon with dinner you can start sneaking 1 taste of something new on his plate. You can even go over in advance that he does not have to eat it, it is just there if he wants to try it. You may even want to set up some sort of reinforcer just for trying it.

Cait now eats tons. For instance, last night was grilled salmon with green beans. Ok so hers was separate and I had to make the steamed beans for her, Emily, John and I had the salmon over greens with honey mustard dressing, but I take what I can get. Heck the boys won't even eat the salmon, but they have tried it!

Josh has always been good with veggies and fruit. He seems to like the standards. He has a handful he doesn't like but Hey I am not too swift either.

My other 2 the NT ones well that is different not always the best eatters but have their own quirks.
Think positive. Pizza= tomato sauce. If we do ketchup on our fries.
Many kids don't like veggies cooked. have you tried them raw.. Like carrots, string beans, peas etc. Also one of the things 2 out of the 3 like.. dipping into salad dressing preferably ranch dsg. Josh has been into salads for the past couple of years. He loves to have cheeseburgers in a specific way: thank goodness for Burger King and Wendy's where this is easied to be done. But he needs to have a slice of tomato on his cheeseburger, ketchup no mayo(Nyers here don't do mustard) He just got into whopper juniors. He is okay now with White Castle and McDonalds even with the cooked onions but they can't be raw.

Josh can get very fixated on wanting certain types of soup(oodle of noodles, if he knows egg drop is in the house) He gets fixated on snacks and where his next meal is coming from. He prefers the Gogurt smoothies or the daminal smoothies, not the regular yougurt. etc.

I am not so bad off as some people.
But I admit even NT can have food issues. One of my kids won't eat cheese(pn pizza okay) no sauce on spaghetti, will only each chicken nuggets or fingers when out.

The little one likes lobster and shrimp. And he like black olives
and they all fight over haf sour pickles when they are in the house.
How is that.

Evelyn,

Its ok. No worries.

The pancakes I make with the carrot in them are orange as a batter but when they are cooked they look like regular pancakes. My kids have never noticed. I make sure they don't see me cooking the orange batter though, lol.
