My ds just turned 5 last month. His behavior seems to be all over the place lately. Really really good to terrible and it switches throughout the day.
Tonight I was putting him to bed we had done bath, pjs and toothbrushing. As I was reading a story. He had his back turned to me. When I looked up he spit a full mouth of water at my face! My entire face was wet and my hair on one side. He laughed. I asked "why would you do that?" He turned and wouldn't look at me. I said "I am angry" and walked out of the room and dried myself off. When I came back to discuss this he refused to look at me but did say he would listen. I kept telling him to look at me; apparently a terrible mistake on my part because he slapped me in the face and got my eye too. I yelled something don't remember what and told dh that he would have to put him on time out and put him to bed tonight. It went on and on with dh for about another half hour and it sounded as if he were being tortured. Cause dh was holding the doorknob and not letting him out of his room. I know he was so tired. We had horseback riding with an 80 min roundtrip car ride this morning. Came home to relax then took him to OT but he fell asleep minutes before arriving and we couldn't get him to wake up and then he had a meltdown in front of the OT and we left. Dh did some gardning with him and that went fine then ran an errand with him and said every little part of it was difficult.
The melatonin does not work anymore. We started a couple months ago with .25 mg We noticed a change right away (ability to sleep in a bit longer). About 8 days ago I increased it to .5 mg I have noticed no change.
I finally decided to call my ped for the referal to the ENT. My ds has very large adenoids (x-rayed at age four). Ds mouth breaths and snores. Ped wanted to wait because he said they are largest at age four and he may grow out of it. We have an appointment on 7/10.
Do you think him knowing preschool year in ending and we are going on a vacation (on an airplane, which he is excited about) has cause him to spiral this way? I did have a very busy stressful week with IEP and meeting with new psychologist for a social skills group that started this week to.
I havfta go pop a xanax and put some ice on my eye. Sorry I always come to vent. My dh is supposed to set up my very own computer this weekend for me:)

Molly,
I am so sorry about your evening with Liam. That is rough. Poor you!
I bet it is all the changes and excitement of the up coming trip. NOt only do kids know change and the school year is ending but they always have all these schedule changes at the end of the year that just drive our kids absolutely screwy.
It will even out soon.
0.5 is still a real small dose, you can try 1 or more and see if it helps. I am glad he is getting his adnoids checked. That will likely help.

My Liam needs 2mg for melatonin to be effective, and like you we started at a really low dose.
