Hi,
I was just wondering how many of you think your kids will go on to marry and have successful careers in the future? I guess for most of us that's the thing we think about the most. Before I saw any signs of autism in my ds I would always joke with my dh and say I hoped my ds would never leave the house and that I would be okay with him living with us forever if that was what he wanted. Now I hope that won't come back to bite me in the butt!!!

Ya know I used to think about that alot and still do think about future but it is different. When Cait was little I used to wonder if she would be dependent on me forever. If I would ever have a real conversaton with her. Well she has gone farther than I imagined quickly and we have conversations all the time.

Now the worry about the future isn't college, spouses, etc. If they do they do. Heck I don't think it would be such a big issue if they weren't ASD. Many typical adults don't go onto college or get married. One of my best friends from elementary is still not married but she is quite successful and drop dead beautiful with a happy life.

What I worry about now is making sure I am doing the best I can to prepare them for independence. The little things. Making sure they have job skills so they don't lose a job. Making sure they have self care skills, will be able to balance a checkbook. Will have enough organizational strategies to keep a home.

I don't know if they will marry. Mike insists he wont. I can see that actually and he may be happier without a spouse. They may live with us for a while, but with the cost of living out here I don't think that is AS specific.

I do know a number of adult ASers that are married though, so they just may. Maybe if they marry a nice organized person with loads of patience I may not have to worry to much.

I don't worry about those future dreams anymore, but I am realistic about thier needs in the future and how to best prepare them to be as happy, independent, well rounded and "successful" in what ever they chose to do as possible.
