FYI about Health Insurance Coverage

In NJ (and probably everywhere in the country)our health insurance plan caps us at 20 therapy visits per calendar year. Not enough visits by any stretch for my ds, who needs OT for sensory intergration, Speech Therapy for Pragmatics, etc, and Group Therapy for social skills.

There is an excellent therapist in our town who specializes in Asperger Syndrome but she doesn't take our health insurance. But she told me what to do so we don't have to pay out of pocket. First she told about the Mental Health Parity Law (see link http://helping.apa.org/spreadtheword/parchar.html ) that health insurance companies are not allowed to cap mental health benefits. Then she told me to contact my health insurance company and demand that she be given a contract with the health insurance company because she is the only therapist in the area who specializes in Asperger Syndrome with Anxiety issues(which is true). Another member of my support group used the same dx with her insurance company (who is much worse than our insurance company) and the therapist got a contract very quickly.

Since all of you have great info, I thought I would pass this along.
