Getting Assessed:Where did you go?

I'm trying to figure this out! The Dr. said start with the school and the school won't assess DS, for it is not interfering with his education. The Dr. also referred us to a local agency who is so full that they only take the mentally handicapped.
Have all of you had your child assessed? If so, where did you go? DS needs OT and I can't believe the school or medical insurance won't help with this!
Thanks

Sugarbaby, first what state are you in?
Hi there!
We got a referral from our pediatrician to take Nick to our local Children's Hospital to their Neurodevelopmental Center where they treat kids for the whole spectrum of issues.

Thanks for the help! I finally spoke with someone from the regional center and they said there is nothing they can do unless he qualifies under special ed. at his school. The school won't asses him. Even his own Dr. doesn't believe in diagnosing Asperger's so young.
I guess we'll treat him on our own. I think there are tons of books out there, so we'll figure it out.
Thanks so much.
Wow, the RC told you that?
If the doc won;t help you, find someone who will. Either change Pediatricians, or else start calling agencies and hospitals directly.

I am in So Cal and I know the stuff around here. There is an autism clinic at children's hospital that does some good evals. If you are in Orange county and your guy is under 6 there is a good place up there. I have to look up the name. It is something like OC 4 kids or something. However, OC has one of the better RC's from what I have heard so I doubt that is where you are. There are also lots of good doctors and specialists in my area down here and I think there are quite a few up in Northern Cali as well.
You may want to contact your local autism society and see what they have to say. They can point you in the right direction.
Did you say that the insurance won't approve an evaluation or your doc won't give a referral. From my experience going through insurance for the actual dx as long as we found a good place to go was a good first step.

PS.
Also look up local research projects. Often they will evaluate as part of the project. There are usually a bunch at UCLA, up at UC Davis and down at UCSD.
You are all so nice and helpful! Thank you a million times over. I'm in Riverside, CA and the school just won't budge. I've left a message with the Autism coordinator at Kaiser, but she's the one who originally sent me to the RC. I'm hoping she can recommend a Dr. that will work with us. I'm not sure why Kaiser goes through the RC?
This is crazy and it somehow seems illegal that either the school or Dr. won't move forward on this....even after an LEP (A friend of DH's) did the initial assessment showing DS has a high probability of Asperger's.
I know we can find help, but I was hoping it would be covered by either the school or our insurance.
Off to do more research!
