Getting Ready For A Fight

According to our local paper, the school district has sent out letters to all of the 1:1s stating that their positions are going to be eliminated. I've got some news for these idiots. Just TRY and take away Claire's 1:1. You're going to see a legal fight like none you've ever imagined. The district has consistently failed my daughter by not providing her with an appropriate learning environment, and the ONLY reason she has managed to get through elementary school is her 1:1, who knows her, understands her, and loves her more than anybody can imagine.

Just had to get that off my chest.

I hear you.

The state of the state budget is just horrible, and it's being taken out in our schools.

I don't know if Graham will have his 1:1 next year; he's off to middle school and there's a rumor that they'll try to set it up differently, but I know he's not going to function well without one. Our team is making the case right now to keep him with one. We'll see what happens.

The ace in our hole is that Graham will wind up being so disruptive without the support of a 1:1 that they'll have to reinstate it. I don't know how Clare is at school - whether she'll slip through the cracks or act up without one, but I hope that the mere threat of legal action wises them up.

It's a crying shame.

We're having major budget trouble here in Iowa also. Our wonderful governor cut all districts by 40%, then brags that he hasn't raised taxes. Well he didn't but he has forced the districts to do it instead.

Our district has eliminated elementary positions and is putting the Title 1 teachers in full-time classroom positions. These are the teachers that pull small groups of kids for extra help. It just seems that education isn't anyone's priority anymore. This really worries me as my dd is newly diagnosed with PDD-NOS and I have no idea what kind of help she may need in the future.

I hope your fight does some good for your child and others!

Our school doesn't have 1:1's at all.

We've been going through the same stuff here. Our local paper is filled with letters to the editor arguing about whether or not we should raise property taxes yet again to support the schools.

A few weeks ago at Nathan's school, they set up 14 empty chairs at the entrance, each with a black balloon tied to it, and a sign saying that the empty chairs represent the 14 teachers (at this school alone) who will lose their jobs if the tax initiative doesn't pass. There are only 30 teachers right now, so with 14 of them gone, that's pretty much cutting the teaching staff in half. There are 600 students at this school, so I'm not sure how they'll get by with 16 teachers. They cut art teachers long ago, and only the older students get music. They are doing away with the class size reduction we voted for a few years back.

However, someone raised the issue about special ed, and it was pointed out that special education is protected under federal law, so that's one of the hardest things to cut. If Claire needs that 1:1, I believe you do have a leg to stand on.

Believe me. This is going to get ugly all over the country. Because school spending is usually the biggest portion of municipal budgets, the schools have a big target on their heads. They are also typically unionized and there are a lot of people that mistakenly

Yup, they fired half the kindy reg ed parapros last year; many more on teh chopping block this years and I know of one sped student who is wheelchair bound has no limbs (all 4) and they yanked her parapro (I think there's still a classroom parapro but her 1:1 is gone, (don't ASK me how that was allowed to happen).
