Suddenly Sylvia is wanting to wear skirts. This has NEVER happened before. But in the past couple of weeks, every day when she's picking out her clothes, she chooses a skirt (we have skirts that have "bloomers" underneath, so her pullup isn't hanging out for everyone to see!) Very strange. And then yesterday, she saw me wearing a ponytail and asked me to put her hair in a ponytail, too -- and you have to understand, in the past she has always absolutely refused to let me do anything with her hair. She just hated the feeling of me combing it and putting it up. But last night she sat still while I put in the ponytail, and she was VERY happy with it -- she even asked for another ponytail this morning. AND, this afternoon, I painted her toenails!!! I was painting mine (a rare occurance, I have to say) and she noticed and asked if she could do it too. She chose a color (sparkly orange) and I painted them. This is actually a huge deal, because normally she flatly refuses to go barefoot -- she has her socks on constantly, even to sleep, even when it's sweltering outside. So not only did I handle her foot and toes for a while, but she willingly took her socks off and kept them off until the polish dried (at which point she put her socks back on by herself, without even asking me to help -- another first.)

Understand that I am the furthest thing away from a girly-girl... I rarely wear makeup, never blow-dry my hair, and cut my nails short with clippers. So I have no vested interest in turning Sylvia into a princess-and-Barbie-loving, pink-wearing, ballerina type of kid. BUT, I do have to admit that it's nice sharing these little female rituals with her, plus I think it's amazing that it gives her an incentive to move past some of her sensory hurdles.

I was going to take a picture of her and post it, but of course by now her ponytail has fallen out, her socks are covering up her painted toenails, and she's taken off her cute little skirt and shirt and is currently wearing a baggy sweatshirt and a pullup and nothing else. Now THAT's my girl!!! ;-)

aaaww Well I'd still like to see a picture of her! That's great that she's trying new things. Hannah would never let me do her hair when she was little either. As she got older she'd let me fix her hair but it'd always be out by the time she got home from school. Now she'll leave ponies and clips in.

How nice! And you know other than the "girl stuff" there are so many good skills there that she is learning. Imitation skills, probably some pretend and dress up. Noticing what mommy and other girls do and wanting to do it. Very very appropriate for her age (I am thinking preschool?)

Don't tell him, but when Dave was little I painted his nails too because he wanted me too. I have a picture of him in a tutu at 2 years old too when he was playing dress up with Emily.

It is such a nice normal part about growing up. Enjoy the phase. My girls hate havign thier hair up too. THey will allow it sometimes but not usually. They go through phases of wanting to be all girlie. EMily has decided she is a sport lovin tomboy for now. That is ok too. She looks darn cute in her karate uniform.

how cute! I think she's gaining some great skills whether she'll be a girly girl or not! and I love it when my girls wear skorts and dresses! I'm not a girly girl either-- but ponytails are much easier than hair hanging down everywhere! My older DD (now 12) used to love to have her hair done -- braids, then curls, then ponytails then barretts. Now she won't do anything with it because heaven forbid mom touch her hair. My younger hates anyone touching her hair (just a very sensitive NT child!), at almost 7 she finally will let me put a barrette or pigtail in to hold her bangs out of her eyes.

HEY! I have one of those pictures too of Dave! Unfortunately Mike never got into the dress up thing, lol. When Cait was that age the only reason she insisted dresses all summer was sensory. The simple cotton pull over dresses with no scratchy parts was her summer wear and stretchpants with a t-shirt was winter wear. No, no sensory issues here, lol. Fortunately she has mostly moved on from that.
