I just had to write this. Yesterday I went to pick up Dave from school and Mike's class is out at lunch. His aide is there this time with the kids. usually at lunch it is the classroom aides while Kelly takes her lunch because she is with Mike on the playground.
Well Mike had gone to wash up and he came back. He is a bit upset and tells Miss Kelly that some boy splashed him with water. Well Miss Kelly is mama bear at school for Mike and immediately, "Common Mike, show me who it was. Thanks for telling me buddy! Good job!" because it is much better than Mike hitting. Off she goes on search to pink slip someone who teased Mike with the look of kill. She does not like ANYONE teasing Mike and ohhhh boy when they do there is heck to pay. Needless to say this isn't the first time but it is pretty rare too because she has a zero tolerance for anyone being mean to our guy.
The nice thing is though that even though she is very protective of Mike, she also lets him be very independent. Often you don't even notice she is there until he needs her. Kelly has been Mike's aide for 2 1/2 years and she is just awesome. I hope we get to keep her when he goes to middle school.

That's so nice to hear and I sure hope Jake ends up with a "Kelly" someday too.

Wow, very awesome. I always seem to hear about ineffective or overprotective aides. I haven't really thought about the possibility of what a GOOD aide could really accomplish.
As Malcolm is in small class of 10, he doesn't need an aide and yet if we had him with someone like Miss Kelly, he probably COULD be in a larger group and function. Because the biggest thing I worry about is if someone teases or gets rough, as Malcolm doesn't quite yet know how to control his overreactions!!
Thanks for sharing.

That's awesome. Kyle doesn't get to keep his aide who was wonderful. :( I hope Mike will get to keep Kelly for as long as he needs her.

ROFL!
I'd love to, but that might be a bit incendiary.
We still don't have Peter's IEP finalized...
