Am I the only one who has a problem with this?

You're not the only one. I never used to be concerned with the scary and gory costumes/decorations but these days it has started to bother me. Haley is also very sensitive to things and scares very easily. She was a glittery fairy for halloween last year and is going to wear the same costume this year (her choice).
I was involved in a haunted house project here in our town but just the thought of it upset Haley really bad so I quit. She said they should take away all the scary stuff and make it into something nice with fairies, unicorns and nice things like that. Maybe she's onto something! :)

Evelyn,
I remember us talking about this last year. Nathan is STILL horrified of the Halloween decorations. This year....we are going trick-or-treating...AT THE MALL!!! I think it will be better for Nathan. He is looking forward to it (it was actually his idea!). I think he finds this less scary! We didn't do it before, because it was not the "normal" Halloween rule (he's a rule follower!) and also Tyler insisted on walking from house to house.....he loves this! But then again, Tyler is very social.

Vaughn does not like gory stuff either and he is absolutely terrified of creepy noises (maniacial laughter, high-pitched screams, cackles, etc.). He refuses to go down the Halloween aisle of any store. He loves trick-or-treating but he will not go to a house that is too scary. He also hates scary movie trailers on the TV....runs out of the room holding his ears.

Mike is bothered by it too, but Cait is amazingly unbothered. Nothing scares nor bothers her. She just doesn't have that at all.
Decorations aren't as bad as the costumes. When trick or treating there are some houses Mike just won't go up to if they are too scary, but the gory costumes really bug him. We never do the scarey ones here. I will never forget when he was about 7 the scream mask was big that year. Freaked the kid out for months.
I gave the option yesterday of perhaps having a halloween party here on our own (couple friends if they want) instead of trick or treating. Mike LOVED the idea and doesn't want to trick or treat at all. The rest do, so we are just doing our street then having a fun night here.
I make creepish food (Emeril gave me a great idea for "shrunken heads" that are baked apples), the house will be decked in pirate garb, we will have "rum" (apple juice in tankards I have) and I am going to download Pirate music to play.
Should be fun!

That's exactly what we're doing this year... trick or treating at the mall. Our local zoo was doing something yesterday but the weather was yucky so we didn't go. :(
