Got up the nerve & did the support group

I finally got up the nerve to go to an AS support group last night! I am glad I did. I was nervous! My dh didn't go but I did. There were a few dad's but mostly mom's. There were 25-30 parents there. It was for parents only. I was only 1 of 3 parents who had daughters with AS. Everyone was very nice-just like here! A psychologist answered questions for 90 min. Everyone was talking. I could relate to everyone whether their kids were young or old. I learned some knew things & I will probably go again. They had a wonderful library of books to check out. It was put on by our County Autism society. Anyway, just thought I'd share. Take Care, Mary Ann

Good for you. I am always telling newbies and others to find a support group with eye contact and facial expressions. We are irreplacable of course, but we can be supplemented ;0
It can be nerveracking however, without anonymity and a computer to hide behind. The main benefit of local support of course is the local information pertaining to doctors, resources, schools and school districts et al that groups like this miss out on.
My SEPTA is supposed to be starting an informal parent group to meet at rotating houses, but I haven't heard too much of it of late -although I volunteered of course.
Think I'll wait a few week then put me butt-kicking boots on.
You may find the groups a bit stilted at first, but keep going the connections will form

It is wonderful that you found comfort with a support group. I do not believe we have one here. I wish we did.
This board is my support group. I love it here because my DS is "normal" here! ;-)

Oh Man, was it the North County one in Carlsbad? I wish I would have gone and said hi to you.
Thing at TriCity? Is this like a lecture/conferance thing? Can I come? I can prbably get DH to take a vaccasion day or two to stay home and watch the kids while I go down there for a few days. Please tell me this is some sort of thing that would justify my traveling the 400 miles. I REALLY NEED A VACCATION! Can I stay with you?
