Great beach day!

We went to Coney Island yesterday and had a great relaxing day on the beach. The way there wasn't much fun. When we have to take long subway/bus rides Everett freaks out and I am constantly putting most of my focus on him. The usual questions are how long till our stop. I usually try to know how many stops it will be and have him count down till our stop and that works. But yesterday we had to wait for quite a while on the train, even I began to get impatient, for another train to move out of our way and Everett didn't take that too well. He doesn't take the train stopping on the tracks without there being a stop very well, he gets scared that something has happened and the train is stuck. Then because we took a different line that ususal and did get off where Anita wanted to get off I had to listen to her whine and complain. I was about ready to turn around and go home before we even go to the beach. They quickly stopped complaining when I actually turned around and started walking in the opposite direction of the beach.

We finally got to the beach and Everett took Anita for me to the water so I could set up. He was surprisingly helpful. After about 10 minutes they came back wanting me to go into the water so I did. Everett was having so much fun. One thing he said he wasn't going to do was go in the water because last time he got stung by jellyfish. He apparently forgot all about that when we got there. I basically hung out with Anita for the rest of the day and I gave Everett the space that he seemed to have needed. As long as I could see him I let him go in the water alone. If I was in the water I let him go the blanket and play in the sand. He made friends with the boy at the blanket next to us and they played together for the rest of the day. Then at the end of the day all on his own they exchanged email addresses and phone numbers. I was so surprised and happy to see him do this all on his own. One thing I know he didn't like was when he left he was covered head to toe in sand and he had to shower off first. I had to get into the shower with him to get the sand off. He had trouble because the water was cold. Meanwhile Anita, who is five years younger, showered and stood patiently waiting. Everett still had sand on him but most of it was off. He got home and I made him shower before doing anything else. I made sure he took a long shower to get all of the sand off.
Next week he wants to ride the Cyclone. I let you know how that goes.

That sounds like a wonderful day-- aside from the having to wait in the train at a nonstop! I wouldn't like that either. I'm so glad he made a friend and even thought to exchange info! how cool!
