had good IEP meeting Ds doing great!

We knew Kyle was having a great year but he's doing even better than we thought. The big thing that surprised us was he's going to his locker between classes alone (without his one-on-one) and getting what he needs for his next class. They said only once the first trimester did he come to one class without his materials and that was because his folder had fallen behind the shelf in his locker and he couldn't find it. We are blown away! He still needs to work on organizing himself to come home but we feel like the aide is the problem there. She's just been doing it for him even though its one of his goals. I had to get really stern with her about it. We also had to get after her a little about adding words to what he tells her when dictating. So he mastered his goal for bringing materials to class and they changed it over to a goal for working independently without prompts. They said he does really well in most classes except math and they think its more the time of day than the material.

He's doing well socially. He has good friends and fits in well. There are no social concerns or behavior concerns. He still has social communication needs and goals but they don't feel like they are impacting him much. He's still going to get 20 min a wk speech sometimes one-on-one, sometimes small group. He'll be working on advanced social communication with 19 objectives. They are going to phase out the friendship group because they just don't see the need anymore & we agree! :) :)

OT isn't needed anymore either for sensory/self regulation. She is staying on as consultant in case something comes up. He hasn't needed any extra breaks & is doing fine without the Wilabager Deep Pressure Protocol. He still has access to a move-n-sit cushion. They will continue to work on typing skills but incorporate it into his writing skills instruction. The OT had some exciting news for us. In Jan or Feb they are getting Dragon Naturally Speaking and are going to try it out with Kyle. She said its been improved and hopefully will work out well for him. If he gets that then we may be able to cut back on the one-on-one aide.

We also cut out monthly team meetings because he's doing so well there is nothing to discuss. The other thing cut was notifying us if a teacher will be absent because he isn't bothered by it anymore. He's done great with the subs and even if there is a sub for his aide. We are just so impressed with him this year.

That's about it. Oh, we weren't expecting him to but Kyle sat in on the IEP meeting. He seemed fine with it all. He didn't say much till the OT talked about the Dragon program. He said "I've GOT to get that!". I wonder if he'll tell me what he thought about it all when he gets home from school.

Very happy mommy, Samantha

Wow that all sounds GREAT!

As for Dragon Naturally Speaking, I can say that it is loads better. My boss just got the new one and uses it for writing evals and swears by it. She got it to try out for her LD son and to help her with time management on the evals. She loves it.

Sounds like he has grown up alot.

WTG Kyle!

It was nice to see you in chat too. I'm glad I was finally able to make one. Hopefully I'll be able to make more soon.

When I picked him up from school I asked him what he thought. He said Fine, his usual canned response. I then asked him if he had any thoughts, concerns, or questions. He asked me lots about the Dragon Naturally Speaking and said he really really hopes he can get that. It makes me wonder if he's bothered more by having the aide than he lets on or if he's just really excited about the prospect of using a laptop at school.

Samantha,

Santa has promised me Dragon Naturally Speaking for Christmas. I will let you (and kyle) know what I think.

WoooHooo! That is fabulous, Samantha! How wonderful for Kyle.

The doc in my DH's clinic uses Dragon Speak, and it's been terrific for her. Oh...I should probably mention that she Hispanic, suffers from a hearing loss, and speaks with a lisp. No really, it's true! Dragon Speak works really well for her!

And Paula...excuse me, but I was using WordPerfect for DOS 5.0 back in '89 & '90, so while you may be a tad older than me, I was waaaaaay behind the times, even back then! LOL

ROFLMBO! I meant to exaggerate, and failed miserably! (What was it 4.0 in '98???) Shoot, I've used so many DOS versions over the years, I don't know one from the other. But then again, YOU'RE the computer gal...NOT ME!!!

Either way, I'd never even HEARD of voice recognition in '89!

LOL
