Had the IEP meeting

Hi,
Yesterday, my DH and I went for the meeting. The meeting included -

Resource specialist
SLP
Principal
Current grade teacher
Behavior modification specialist
School physcologist

The school finally realized that Sravan does not have behavior issue and indeed has asperger. The modifications would be the following:

- 1/week - work with SLP
- 3/week - work with resource ( but I think this is not required as Sravan has no issue academically). But I didn't want to say as Sravan can use this time to finish up some work which might not be able to in a classroom that has 32 kids next year.
-Continue to take lunch in the office.
-Get break tickets and he can use it whenever he is overwhelmed. The SLP also said that she will train him to use this ticket by giving him an external aid (like thermometer) to understand his frustration. There will be a 2-week training period begining school year. This is the time they will observe him
- ALso go to library and play during unstructured time where the SLP will watch him.

SHe seems really enthusiatic and have taken lot on her shoulder. We couldn't discuss about classroom arrangements.

One sad news though that the current Principal is leaving and we are getting another replacement. This principal is the best. I also interviewed the potential 4th grade teachers and one of them will NOT work for Sravan. Do you think I should write and request that he not be with that teacher?

thank you,
Anandhi

It sounds like you did pretty well for your child -- It looks like they are going to be getting a lot of support for 4th grade. My son is also going into 4th grade and wow what a difference. My son works with a consultant teacher and uses a thermometer to express how he is feeling. Adam developed his own thermometer and calls it his pride thermometer -- helps to put some ownership in his court. So far so good.

I am surprised that the Special Ed director isn't consultanting you on placement for your child next year. That is one of my stipulations is that I have to decide where Adam goes from year to year. After I speak with the teachers both past and present we decide together who is most appropriate. I would go back and talk to the Special Ed director and express your concerns over placement for next year. I bet they will listen to you.

Good luck to you and your child for the Fall!

Amy,
I am glad to hear Adam is using this thermometer method. Yes, we are planning to talk to the resource specialist and raise our concern about placement.
