Had our transition to middle school meet

Ever have a meeting with 17 people present? Oh my. The current team met with the middle school team and disscused Kyle's present level of performance and needs. It wasn't a IEP writing kind of meeting, more an informal getting to know you thing. We'll be meeting again before school starts. They all seemed very nice and more than willing to do what ever needs to be done. They talked about training and books they could read. The MS staff asked to make Kyle's associate be full time next yr at least to start with. I think they are a little scared. They admitted they've never had a fully included child with AS before. I felt good about it all though because every concern we brought up was met with no problem we can do xyz. The only thing we weren't happy about was they haven't hired an associate yet. We had hoped they had one in place so she could be at the meeting. But they're working on it. I can't believe my baby boy is going to middle school!

Wow, glad to hear they are so willing to try. That makes all the difference in the world.

The associate thing (aide thing) is tough. It isn't the highest paid position in the world and at times it can be hard to find a qualified quality aide for a kid. Full time though may actually help. More folks may be looking for full time school if they are going back. It is often harder to find aides for those odd schedules of just this and that class or these 3 hours here. I have been blessed that Mike has had the same aide for the past 2 1/2 years and will have her again next year. She is good, she gets him and gets autism. I like Cait's aide too. But she is graduating this year and will be a teacher next year. I am nervous about who we will get to replace Mrs. C. We have had some not great aide experiences in the past as well.
